What's the midge situation ? I was thinking of going up, but decided
not to risk it as it's a none trivial journey for me, from Hampshire.

I barely saw a midge. I don't think the Cairngorms are as badly
infested as the West Coast. Torridon last year was heaving with the
    wee mites.

We were in Ullapool and Glen Affric for the 10 days up to the Bank
Holiday, and the midges were extremely noticeable by their almost
total absence. We were lucky to an extent because it was usually
either breezy, hot, or raining (ie not their favourite conditions) but
I wonder if the extended series of cold nights has restricted them
    this year?

I heard a short radio piece the other day talking about the late onset
of midgification this year, with an expert saying that the current (up
to yesterday) spell of warm and damp weather were ideal conditions for
    the midge population to explode.

    *sigh*

This weekend camping in Snowdonia, the midges were a nightmare. I got
out of the tent to go to the loo on Saturday night, and I now have
hundreds of itchy bites all over my legs and bum. Gross. A week and a
half ago, though, I returned from 2 weeks walking across Scotland,
where I had only one bite. There were a few midgies around but they
    weren't biting.

    Best wishes,

That's because they were on holiday in Wales. A swarm of midges
descended upon me on bank holiday monday and sucked me dry. I've
counted forty bites on my legs, plus innumerable ones behind my
ears. It was easy to outwalk them, but they got me when I had to
stop to look at the map.

Don't let it put you off Snowdonia - I've never seen anything like the
numbers (of midges) I came across a week ago anywhere in Wales before.

OK - thanks, I'll maybe get up there this week as it looks pretty dry.

It certainly was - we managed 2 nights at the campsite before fleeing
to the safety of the Ling Hut !

I can confirm this. Over the weekend (Sat & Sun) I wore a wraparound
skirt and a pair of football socks. My bare upper legs must have been
kept safe by the flapping of the skirt; however the socks proved to be
irresistable and my shins and calves are still covered in bites. Where
was I? At an archery shoot in Glyncornel Woods, wherein lieth the
erstwhile Llwynypia YH. Scotland is welcome to its midges back.

A few about in the Ochills on Sunday, not enough to ruin my picnic.
Arrochar a fortnight ago was more problematic.

Not been out and about much lately though.

It's the LAMM next weekend, so they'll be out in force by then 🙂
