Politicians jousting on mountain-unicycles

heres the girl. Any body know who she is? They did a LITTLE more
doctoring to this pic, but its the same torso and clothing.

The event this pic comes from looks interesting, can anyone enlighten us
about it.

Maybe you could use those pool noodle things, it could turn into a
clobbering gladiator match though... hehe. Some of my friends used to
use PVC pipes on skateboards to joust, but they would just stick the
pipe into each other's trucks, so they wouldn't poke each other to
death.

Get yourself a pair of nice 'pole saws'
(http://wesspur.com/saws/silky-pole-saws.html). They're lightweight,
can be extended to various lengths, and won't always impale your
opponent. The teeth on the saw blade are quite scary, however, and will
force your opponent to fall from his mount prematurely, guaranteeing you
a sure win every time! Oh, and for training purposes, get a rubber
blade cover. They usually come free with the quality saws.

When you're not jousting, you can use these babies to prune trees for
extra cash! Bling, bling!

Mojoe - That certainly is you on the right!

I deal in copyright issues all the time. Since they altered the image
you are only partially recognizable. The problem is that this is used as
an editorial piece (as apposed to an advertising piece), and as such it
doesn't require a model release for printing. That said, the
photographer of the image "owns" the copyright of the original artwork
(the photo) used in the composite - he/she has a very strong case of
copyright infringement.

Class is now finished for the day, but there will be a test next
Friday...😄

lances for uni jousting:

get those "fun noodle" pool tons. get some fairly think dowels. wrap
dowel with noodle. put large chunk of noodle on end. use lots of duct
tape to hold stuff together. that's how we made the one's in mojo's pic.
also seen in mojo's pic trash can lids that make great shields.

Hmmm...someone ought to teach her.

I did wonder where the magazine picked those bodies from. If the
offended bodies wish to contact the magazine, give me a PM and I'll send
you the contact details. They ought to be more careful before they
decapitate politicians and stick their heads on real people.

You can make a good lance from a 2" wooden dowel with a foam pad
attached, i've only done it without shields, and genreally with the rule
that you can only aim for the hip or the shoulder i.e. no shots at the
stomach or face. I'm not sure the pool noodles would work as you wouln;t
really be able to drive the other person off their uni, the idea of
wrapping them round a wodden pole sounds good, but you really need
something on the end aswell. You can just about see what i'm talking
about here (this is the final of the competition at crawley juggling
festival last year, i'm on the left, and lost)

This thread keeps getting better and better! First the jousting image,
which I thought was hilarious. Great cartoon! I especially liked the
mountains underneath. (Five seconds to think about actual unicycle
jousting on a tightwire... I think there would be mostly draws; very few
wins. Unless you had the Monkees up there, in which case they might ride
right through each other!)

But Then one notices the one guy is wearing leg armor. A non-unicycling
artist creating the image would not think of that. The simple Google
search was great. Look at all those jousting images! The first one shown
on that page might be the old one that was once featured in a Microsoft
recruitment brochure.

But of course, finding an image on Google does not mean it's public
domain, and nobody should know that as well as a newspaper. Shame on
them for not attempting to contact the owners and ask permission! They
should be made to pay.

For me, payment would be nice if it came in the form of a little article
"behind the scenes" of that cartoon, showing the originals of one or
both pictures, with a little story about where they came from. More free
publicity for unicycling! If Mojoe is interested, I think he should
contact the paper. Just because Iowa and NZ are really far apart does
not mean the Internet puts us right next door.

Your right - images found on the internet are not "public domain" (with
very few exceptions). The issue is in it being used for an editorial
piece (magazine / newspaper). They can print it without permission. It
would be nice for them to ask, but they don't need to. This would be
different if it was used as a product shot, book cover or other
commercial usage. Then they would be liable for using the models without
consent.

The person they need permission from is the creator of the photograph -
that person has a very strong case of infringement.

Only with the original photographers permission. They used the original
photograph as a source to copy, and even included part of the image in
their final mock-up...which amounts to plagiarism.

Interesting question. Magazines rarely "own" an image - the editor
wouldn't have a case, although the artist of the composite, and the
original photographer of the unicycle image would. Copyright
Infringement in the broad sense means "use without permission", and
applies to illegal copying of music, videos, words, pictures and other
works of art. The perpetrator in this case would be GizmoDuck who
scanned the piece (unless permission from the copyright owner - the
artist(s)- was first obtained).

In my previous comments, I was referring to the image (picture) alone.
But, yes Danny - absolutely - the text alone would be the copyright
ownership of the author/writer. The Publisher may have a claim to the
assembled piece (text and artwork), by having paid licensing rights for
the individual parts - depending on the rights obtained (or not
obtained) from the artists, photographers, and writers.

For jousting poles:

My friend and I just used the wooden shaft of a shovel, with the shovel
head taken off, and we duct-taped a tennis ball on the end of each. Then
we made shields out of card board with duct tape handles. Simple!

If I were the photographer, I would have quite a bit of fun with this.
Calling the article maker and whatnot, demanding money or go court. You
could get one sweet unicycle out of it, possibly. I wouldn't know.

It's not like they just took your photo and used it in their article.
I's had major rework obviously, with unicycles, shields and lances
redrawn. It's more like inspiration from the picture really.

If you want some credit, try for something like Foss's suggestion, a
promotion of the unicycle sport.
