  1. So I was at the 12 hours of Tsali this past weekend. A female racer was at the bike wash with a 3 day old Trek Fuel. One of the cables had been rubbing on her frame (for 3 days) and had dug a huge groove into the carbon material. Probably 1/3 of the total cable diameter dug into the frame.

You'd have to ride for years on a metal frame to do that kind of damage to the frame.

Carbon isn't bad for super light road bikes. Doesn't make any sense on a dirt bike.

  2. It seems to me, just my impression, that eventhough carbon fiber is very strong if it is bent in the wrong direction or bumped it may break it instead of denting it as in Al or steel. Am I wrong?

yeah, CF is a very directional material (depends what size and type of weave is used) and it wont dent or bend, it will snap if too much force is put on it. or at least youll have a big nasty crack in it

also after a long period of time (also depends how much strain is being put on it) it actually gets more flexable. i dont know if you know what a Lahar is but someone i know through work has one and the whole back end is so flexable now that if you grab the back wheel the rear fork part will twist very easily, its getting pretty dodgy

  4. I've seen that, a friend of mine had a Trek road bike and it squealed a lot just by pushing it on the saddle. My thought was that it wasn't to stiff by that time. There were no noticeable cracks or defects.

  5. well a big dig in from cable rub on carbon fiber makes no sence to me...see carbon fiber is actually stronger then aluminum,....or steel for that matter because of the compound mix....but i actually bought thoughs carbon fiber patches from lizard skin for cable rub put it in spots on the head tube...and have NEVER, EVER had any rub IN the patch...so she must have dropped her bike or dinged the frame...*and to what you said about carbon fiber....i think its a bad idea for a frame because they sayd once you ding the carbon fiber it becomes weak and is no good anymore...so yeah id stick to HALF carbon fiber frames if i ever got one*

  6. Cool beans. I've had cables rubbing for years, and it never made it past the paint. Sound like the girl needs to get someone who knows how to assemble a bike.

The bare cable? If I let the bare cable rube on my bottom bracket (without the plastic slider) it will cut it "in half" in short time. The only cables that rub on my bike are the parts that are covered with the sleeve.

Indeed. Although I do get a little cable rub along the top tube but nowt serious. I use an al frame by the way.

No, it was actually the cable housing. Since I have yet to see a frame that when properly assembled will allow bare cable to contact the frame solidly enough to damage it, I assumed that's what we were talking about.

Anyone who lets a bare cable on frame situation go for long enough to do that kind of damage deserves a broken frame, regardless of material.

  10. Irondonut has been on every bit of this forum spouting his [censored] about carbon fibre. The man obviously has some grudge that no-one else sees. Personally I would love CF frame, or a Ti frame or a top quality Al frame. Sadly I don't, because I can't afford and can't justify the price atm. The man should just be happy for what he has rather than making up stories and going on a crusade that no-one else seems to have noticed. if so many CF frames were broken do you not think that Trek would do a batch recall? Or that somebody would have died or been seriously injured due to catastrophic frame failure?

Chill out mr donut and enjoy riding your bike!

  11. Davebee has a good point...a very good point to ponder....

  12. Of course she was a real racer who raced 12 hour events... you simply talk about riding on the internet.

This would be the difference between the world of theory and the world of reality.

  13. You don't ride off-road much do you?

Suspension moves, bikes bounce around, everything gets dirty and wet...

I'm looking at my offroad bike right now. It has 5 spots where the cables touch the frame at other than the endpoints. It's a perfectly assembled bike...

Of course I will never have to worry about the cables eating though the frame because the frame is made of metal...

  14. You've got five points where the cable is touching your frame or five points where your cable housing is touching your frame? If it's the former you (or more accurately, your frame) has got problems. You're also quite naive to think that a steel cable can't cut through a metal frame.

  15. Well I use Pace carbon fibre stickers at the points where my cable housing would touch the frame (Salsa Scandium Bandito) & it protects very well 😉
I also have carbon bars & a carbon seat post & havent had any problems with them at all, they function well, there light & they look cool & I never worry about them any more than I would if they were steel/alu or whatever.
Oh & I'm going to change my Fox forks for a set of carbon Pace RC31 rigid forks in the near future 😄

  16. A plastic cable housing touching bare Ti is never going to rub though the Ti. It will however rub though carbon fiber.

And you make up non-existent friends. Your "reality" is invented in your mind, on the fly, to support whatever argument you've decided you want to make.

You've come here and had you ass handed to you by half this forum, yet you still don't get the hint. You're not around your 13 year old friends anymore, so your made-up [censored] just isn't going to fly.

Either grow a pair and learn how to ride (and for gods sake, learn something about bikes before you join a bicycling forum) or just go away. Maybe you have a thing for public humiliation, or maybe you think that if you BS enough you'll "win" by attrition because people will get sick of trying to pound sense into your head. Either way, you drag people down to your bickering level.

When you resort to calling people who disagree with you "jackass" and "idiot" it means you've lost the argument because you've run out of facts. So go ahead and toss some names at me, because lord knows you ain't got any facts to use.

My road bike has a nice carbon fiber fork, with Al steerer, it is very light and absorbs some vibration from the Al. Great configuration Al frame + carbon fork. 😎

  19. Face it you're a fat slow posur. You're the guy that shows up on all of the fast training rides, gets dropped as soon as the pace crosses north of 21mph and yet still pretends to be the man to your non-cycling associates.

Don't be a hater because I'm actually fast.

    Junior.

What has ANY of this got to do with the topic on discussion? How about we keep the discussion factual instead of hurling personal insults around? I don't care how fast you are.

You haven't said anything to convince me not to use CF on a bike. You have quoted a few sprurious events, non of which are verifiable.
