I'm new to disc brakes and have a new ride (Trek Feul EX7) with a pair of Hayes HFX9's. They work flawlessly except for an intermittent problem I'm having. When riding on the road at high speed, I can hear what sounds like a grinding coming from the front brake. If I pump the lever the sound will go away, although sometimes I have to pump the lever several times times to get it to stop.
I have not noticed this while on trails and at lower speeds. Any idea what may be causing it and how to correct it?

Could be air trapped in the system. Bleeding and topping up with suitable hydraulic oil is probably the first thing you should check. Is everything aligned correctly?

Yes, everything looks good- there is no disc to pad contact. I've been reading up on disc brakes at the Hayes website and I think you may be right about needing to bleed the system. I'll pick up some fluid, read the manual and give it a shot.
