I think they should have had someone else do it, but they probably just took turns that the camera
crew thought it was noteworthy. I was trying to think of the last time a situation like this
happened since Phil and Paul mentioned Vincent Barteaux (sp?), who went on a long break early in the
1984 Tour. He was on the Renault team of defending champ, Fignon. There was also Ronan Pensec, who
wore the yellow jersey in the 1990 Tour while on team "Z" where Lemond was the defending champ. I
suppose Pensec probably did not have to do a lot of work since he was a Frenchman on a French team.
This situation happens seldom enough that it does look odd to have a GC leader doing support work.
