I'm thinking of investing a few quid a month in order to develop an online forum on my website www.virtualwalker.com. The forum will be accessible directly from any internet browser and therefore a newsreader will not be required. It will also be possible to index the forum to make meaningful categories (walks, equipment reviews, news, car sharing, for sale, wanted, favorite walking stories, jokes etc).
Before I do this, because it does cost (my personal dosh), do any of you reckon it would be worthwhile?
If I do it, I'd welcome your views. For instance what categories etc

If you're doing it for your own entertainment or as a learning vehicle then go ahead. If you're asking whether people will use it, then you need to assess the other web forums out there and offer something better. Are you aware of the popular Google Groups access to usenet ? <URL:http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.rec.walking?hl=en> This is the best web forum that I've found - <URL:http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/forum.asp?sp=590148384674536955536&v=1>. I'd be interested in any others that other people use.
The 'better' bit as I see it is something a little more friendly. I'm not an advert fan either unless it can be transformed into a 'freebie for distribution to the group' sort of thing.
I also want the site to get a bit more interactive. I'm happy to host other people's walks and piccies - even to the point where I will help do the gradient profiles and maps etc.
Important point is free, friendly and interactive.
Cheers
Antony

I participate is a few forums but frankly prefer newsgroups where active.
If you do decide to go ahead you could try phpBB http://www.phpbb.com/ which is not just free but also very good!
