Can someone tell me which way the hands are supposed to be oriented in
a handstand pushup? Do the fingers point forward, or inward, or at an
angle? Or does it not matter?

Can someone tell me which way the hands are supposed to be oriented in

Most people find a position for the hands which is most comfortable to
them. You will also need to decide which way round to do the exercise.
I do them up against a wall, facing the wall, in order that I don't go
too far off perpendicular. However, it is a little awkward to get into
the starting position until you get used to it.
However, try starting with the hands slightly wider than shoulder
width apart, with fingers splayed and the middle digit pointing
straight forward. Make sure your feet are up against a firm surface
and able to slide freely. You will find wearing trainers may cause
friction so try stockinged feet.
You'll have to work out for yourself what to do with your head, which
you will find can prevent you achieving a full 90 degrees at the
elbow.
This is a strong body-weight exercise which is uncommon among women.
Um Charles will only ask that you get in a position adventageous to
him, ie: grab your ankles, 'cause he only likes back door sex, and even
then usually just with men.
Larisa,
Either way I find it's making my nether-regions tingle. How about pics?

Actually the best thing to do is to play around with it, and find out
what angle is most comfortable and gives you the best balance
(balance not so important if you're using a wall). Roughly speaking,
your fingers point towards your head.

That would require Larisa to balance on the outside of her wrists,
which can be quite painful.

I'm not sure what you mean, maybe its my description. I haven't
done them for awhile, but when I did gymnastics as a teenager
one of our warmups was doing 20 handstand pushups (no walls,
you were expected to keep balance). The position was something
like this:
Head
Head
Head
fingers fingers
palm palm

You are quite right JS, I was just joshing about your description,
being the pedant that I am!!
Given that a hand-stand press-up starts at the arms extended position,
to achieve the start position of the hands you suggested would require
the impossible position I jokingly described. ;o)
At the Royal Naval School of Physical Training where I was a Staff
Officer, the qualifying classes were required by the Staff
Instructors, to do free-standing hand stand press-ups as a form of
punishment for minor misdemeanours, and they didn't leave the gym
until they had done them!!
It's very hard to achieve a hand balance when you're knackered, let
alone do the press-ups!!
