Actually getting ready switch off my mountain bike and buy a roadie, just not sure what is better to have. i imagine at the end of the day I get the same speed out of both

I'm making the switch from a MTB to a Trek X500 commuter bike for scooting down the road with full gear. After that, who knows? heh

Does it really matter what you ride, style is a personal thing, look at all the different bikes, clothing etc etc there is around.

On any given weekend you'll get alsorts of people, tall, skinny, fat, good looking, ugly you name it you'll see it, riding alsorts of bikes and loving it.

As long as you enjoy it, and it works for you, f*&k what anybody else thinks. If people give you a hard time about what you ride or how you ride it, tell them to f**k off. 😉

Ride whatever you want and works for you. I know a guy that has quad (yes, that's right FOUR) chainrings on his Catrike. But then again us recumbent riders are sometimes out there. Whatever gets you up and down hills in good speed and effort is what you will need. Nevermind what anyone else says.

Both my roadbikes are dual chain ring, because that's the way they came when I bought them. (Used bikes) I don't even use most of the gear combos already available in that I am an older recreational rider in a relatively flat environment. (Tucson) I can't imagine that there is status with regard to riding ability for having 2 rather than 3 chain rings. Maybe there are guys with 2 who need 3 to do the same climbs that you do, who you only see down on the flats. They are the ones who are less of a "real rode biker".

In the Tour de Georgia one of the PRO teams were using triples.

Most of the trash talk about tripples seems to come from guys who are running compact doubles with 12-27 cassettes. Maybe they're just angry about being bad at math. Don't let someone else's idea of fashion dictate your gear choices.

All seriousness aside, I have a double and a triple. Many is the time that, about 2/3 of the way up a hill, I wished I would have brought Granny. (Jethro and Elle-May as well.).

Ride what works for you. If you want style, put a wicker basket on your handlebars and replace your carbon bar-ends with streamers, like the little girls have on their bikes. Tell me that's not style.

you gotta push the gear that is appropriate for you.
the elite riders, and self appointed elite may sneer, as so much interpretaion hinges on image.
you define what is road style for yourself, your goals and ability. to think that one must emulate the pros, who shun triples, is a bit overstated.

i personaly would suggest pedaling the small ring smoothly than making a valiant but vain effort with an overgeared setup.

now, off to climb today's wall in a smaller cog than ever...
