Most of the landranger software includes elevation information, I
think (though generally a coarser scale than the map data, and
interpolated as necessary).

If that's not true, then Anquet (which is what I use) certainly does.
It doesn't route plan for you though, you need to do that yourself.

Well it might not have been mentioned before but I know someone who
has just started selling some (Windows only) software he has written
(primarily for walking). Take a look at
<URL:http://www.britishlandscapeexplorer.co.uk/> however note the web pages
aren't particularly good (unlike the software itself), and he should be
replacing it with a nicer one in the near future.

Because he tries to keep a true scale for the profile for most bike rides
will look quite flat - I have suggested a change in that area - but you do
get total ascent/descent as well. It is also possible to just map out small
sections of a journey if you want to see the profile for a climb for instance.

Disclaimer - I have been involved in the beta-testing for it.

A few times now I'd have had use for MS Autoroute on trips, preferably on a
phone/PDA with the pocket version. Does anyone use a phone for map reading
and is it practical?

I have the package from tracklogs. It's excellent.

It won't plan routes for you but I'm not sure you'd gain much as
cyclists from that sort of package.

I know that a number of people would like GPS functionality. However
neither he nor I have one to hand, nor does there seem to be a decent
cheap GPS interface library (.NET) available. It will probably get done
some time (maybe when one of us get a GPS as a pressie), however as with
nearly all software you have to choose when you release and with how much
functionality.

I'll pass along your preference for GPS functionality though.
