i remember as a kid bikes that had solid tyres that couldnt puncture ... is there an uptodate version of this at all for road bikes or are they something that will never catch on again due to weight or material restrictions, etc?
being a very heavy chap a few pounds extra weight for a tyre wouldnt make much difference on my bike!! 😉

They *do* exist, but they are a Work of Stan. Rolling resistance is increased enormously and the ride is bone-crunchingly terrible, or so I have been told. Do not use them, for they are Evil. See also sheldonbrown.comtyres.htmlOpen ↗

All sorts of new tyres don't puncture much (see elsewhere for opinions on solid)
I have rather horrid hutchinson excells, even though not worn out, they are covered in nicks and slashes and I've taken good sized shards out of it. I think they need replacing as they have cracks all over, I may get some more even though I no longer commute through 10 miles worth of urban decay where breaking bottles on the road seems to be a major passtime.

I was given some to try out once (cannot remember the make). It felt like riding on metal rims - bone shakingly hard and the road holding was lethal.
I am sure they contributed to the joint failing between my bottom bracket and chainstay.
