This weekend I failed for the second time to cycle the 280miles from Teesside to Newport, South Wales in one go We set off at 9.15 Saturday and cycled against the wind and with around four hours in the rain. We gave up at 6.00am this morning (Sunday) due to fatigue and a shortage of dry clothes just before Leominster some 80 miles away from Newport.
We had a support vehicle to feed us and bring us home. We tried to do the same journey two years ago and got slightly further (Hereford) and had to pack up due to fatigue.
At 55 years old am I being unrealistic to think I can do this trip in 24 Hours. On paper it looks feasible but in practice it seems a little too far.
The good thing is people still insist on paying the sponsor money although we did not complete our goal.
It's entirely conditioning. Just keep telling yourself it'll eventually happen. Keep making the attempt, ride a lot between tries and eventually you'll get there. (I'm assuming not major health issues here - heart, lungs etc - and keeping properly hydrated)
I have parents in their sixties and they remind me everyday with what they accomplish that age is never a factor, just determination.
Keep at it! 😄

You are doing a one way journey. The wind was against you. Arthur was going round a circuit so gained and lost whilst going round. With training (Arthur is super fit) you could do it, but it might be easier in the other direction.
I'll second that. The prevailing winds in the UK are from the South West so you are more likely to get favourable winds going from Newport to Teeside.
You say "we" how many of you are cycling? How about getting a team of support riders to ride short distances to give you shelter from the wind. That way you will always have fresh legs on the front whilst you ride on their wheels. It might seem like cheating but it's what Lance spends half the tour doing. -- Phil Cook looking north over the park to the "Westminster Gasworks"

Standard maximum Audax UK time for 400km (250 miles) is 27 hours.
Many AUK members will cover the distance faster, but they are experienced, frequently habitual, long-distance cyclists. You were trying to do more in less time.
You could easily achieve this ride in a weekend if you allowed yourself a few hours' rest (if your rules permitted this) and tried not to burn yourself out by riding too hard early on.
You have achieved *masses* more than most mere mortals,
congratulations!
I would agree with Helen - it's a while since I did any serious audaxing, but I used to allow myself 10 miles / hour *including* all stops, so while your timescale is acheivable, for me, at least, it would be a bit on the quick side! I would be tempted to drop the support vehicle and go for a self supported ride - that way you don't have the temptation to pack quite so easily (OK so the support is just a phone call away, or as near as the nearest railway station - but it somehow feels worse!). Well Done!

I know how you feel. I tried Bristol - Hull and packed at Newark with 70 miles to go a few years ago. I'm going to give it another go next month. Unsupported.
