Nashbar's house brand frames ("Frame"😉 are also a super deal. Their
basic aluminum road frame is currently available for $120. A friend
bought one and built it into a perfectly good bike; I don't think he has
any complaints about it, though it probably doesn't get a huge amount of
riding time. I think Nashbar claims weights of 3.8-4.4 lbs. depending on
the size you order. That's probably on the heavy side. Oh yeah: fork not
included. They also sell a carbon-seatstay version much like the
Scattante frame above. It is left as an exercise for the reader to
determine if the frames are actually built in the same Taiwanese factory.
Used, eBay is your friend. My personal score was a perfectly decent
frame, a boring aluminum lump that the manufacturer lists as a 1500g
frame (about 3.5 pounds). I bought that never-ridden frame for less than
the price of landing a Nashbar frame, but my frame included a Time fork
and an Ultegra BB.
If you go this route, make sure you're comfortable building your own
bike. LBSes may grumble, but they'll build up the bike for you. The
problem is their build fee is likely to eat into your savings to a
considerable extent.
