Pretty good afternoon. I just got back from a ride up to the lake. A little
busy thanks to it being a long weekend Saturday but a damn fine run, tongue
bite notwithstanding.

By the by - something else I noticed on my ride: This trend in women's
fashion towards 'less is more'; It's a GOOD thing.

is definately not Less is More. It is more about style and class. I
may know absolutely nothing about bicycles, but I know about fashion.

As far as chewing gum. No matter what you do, you can chew gum. I
hate to admit it, but I am a hardcore gum chewer. And I have done just
about everything possible with gum in my mouth and I am still alive to
write about it. So chew the damn gum.

I'm not submitting a peer reviewed academic thesis. The cite isn't that
important. I heard the version as sung by halfcocked. I do not see the need
to give a full citation of every single person worthy of credit on the music
for a lyric fragment in a sig. I've gone through this elsewhere with Janis
Joplin tunes. Considering it isn't only the words I am referring to but the
rendition I see no problem with attributing it as I do.

But in interests of compromise I will alter the attribution somewhat.

And no, I wouldn't normally expect to see, three or four names as an
attribution, Joan Jett, would have been fine. Your reasoning by not
giving credit to the songwriter, because you are thinking of a cover
version, is not very accurate. If you were leaving us a sound file,
then it would make sense, to list the performer. We can't hear the
"version" you are thinking of. Your addition does work.

It really isn't a big deal, and I don't really care all that much if
you want to be inaccurate. This time, I recognized the song and
figured Joan Jett deserved her due credit.

I can dispute it. Kris Kristofferson/Fred Foster wrote it. Yes, the
song will always be associated with Janis, but it isn't the only
version of that song. When I think of "Me and Bobby McGee", I often
think of a version I have heard with Bob Weir doing the vocals.
It's funny, Bobby McGee is considered Janis' signature song, but I
more strongly associate her with "Piece of My Heart".

You are missing the point, you are not posting an audio clip of the
song. You are posting the lyrics. So the attribution should go to the
writer, or as Lokey suggested, making a reference to the version.
And in your case, if you are altering the lyrics, it would be fair to
make a note of that.

Like I said, no big deal, in the overall scheme of things, but I love
music and respect a lot of the artists who write/perform it. If this
was a music newsgroup, the various inaccuracies wouldn't be tolerated,
and I don't think they should be here either.

I love music as well. I think you can tell. I love the music of the
sixties. I respect the writer and the performer. I am a writer myself.

Don't you think I respect the person who actually wrote the song as
well as the person who performed the song?

I alter the lyrics only to shorten and use as a closing. I take out
certain lines and keep others. I don't change the words. Do you want me
to post the whole song as a sig?

I would not alter the amazing poetry of Jim Morrison. I would not
destroy the lyrics written by John Lennon, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell or
Carol King. To me the lyrics are more important than the music. I am
all about the lyrics. I love words. I love poetry. I love books.
Words are everything to me.

Did you ever hear that old saying...."You are the words and I am the
music...Together we are the SONG!!!" The song is the thing, no matter
who sings it, who renders it differently or who hears it.

The song is the beauty. Beauty is not to be picked apart. Just
enjoyed. Enjoy the song Jeff. Life is too short to pick it apart.
Sometimes you have to shut down the logical side of yourself and just
feel and enjoy. 🙂
