Buxton to Macclesfied

The Old Road out of Buxton is so old as to be pretty much off-road
between Buxton and Derbyshire Bridge, as shown here:

I'd stick with the A54, which turns into the A537 after the Congleton
turn-off.

West of the Cat & Fiddle, you've got the choice of the old road and the
new: the old road is narrow, winding, rather lumpy and liable to be full
of fast cars using it as a short cut. The main road, OTOH, is longer and
rather bendy but more or less all downhill; IMO much more fun.

Thanks Mark. Your information is most usefull.

I sometimes go from Ripley to Bowdon.
I go Pentrich, Crich, Whatstandwell bridge, B5035 up to the top then
right to Bolehill, b road to middleton top, then get on the high peak
trail and stay on to Sparklow.It's a little rough in places where it
gets horsed, but I always do this with 23mm tyres hard and it's a
lovely run except on summer sunday or BH.Coffee and cake and taps in
the toilets at Parsley Hay when open.
Off at Sparklow, right at the pub, little lane through Hurdlow town (
two houses) to Earl sterndale, so to axe edge, over moor to A537 then
to Cat and fiddle.
I agree that the main road is best down to Macclesfield, especially in
the morning at weekend, when the traffic goes the other way mostly and
there are no big lorries, which can be scary on weekdays.
The tarmac in the last mile or two is dangerously rough if you hit it
at high speed, and your lights will leap to destruction.
Sainsbury's next to King's school does good coffee by the bucketful and
cakes.That is where I stop for a break.
