HERNE HILL VELODROME - THE LATEST
PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO YOUR MEMBERS / FRIENDS / COLLEAGUES
At a packed public meeting on Thursday 12thMay politicians, sporting bodies
and the cycling and residential community committed themselves to securing
the re-opening of Herne Hill Velodrome at the earliest opportunity and to
ensuring its long term future for cycling. It was announced that the
following day a delegation would be meeting the landlords the Dulwich
Estate.
On Friday 13thMay 2005, the GLA Member Valerie Shawcross, Philip Kolvin and
Geeta Manglani met with the Dulwich Estate and the proposed developer. The
developer agreed to grant a licence to enable the Velodrome to re-open as
soon as practical matters such as insurance are sorted out. A further
meeting is to take place at the GLA on 18thMay to make the necessary
arrangements. That meeting will be attended by Graeme Geddes and Andy Sutch
of the London Velodrome Trust, Valerie Shawcross, Southwark Council and the
developer. We will provide further news after the meeting, but are now
hopeful of a very early return to site. The developer has also accepted that
cycling should continue to at the Velodrome for the long term, and stated
that it had no intention of preventing that. Regeneration of the site will
remain a matter for cyclists, their sporting and funding bodies and their
representatives. All in all, this was a constructive meeting, although there
is much work still to be done to gain readmission and then to plan a
sustainable future for the Velodrome. We will keep you informed.
We are sure that the attendance and strength of feeling at the public
meeting, which the developer in fact attended, has had a major effect on the
developer's thinking. Thanks to all those who attended: you have made a real
difference.
