  1. For the first time in about a decade, I decided to do some home
entertaining. I invited a bunch of women friends/co-workers over for
"An Evening Viewing of 'Phantom of the Opera' for Ladies Only."

I was going to bake up a bunch of low carb treats, but my work
schedule is such that I gave up on that idea - besides, only two of us
    were low carbers anyway.

So, this is what I served for munching:

Fresh strawberries with add-ons of whipped cream, raw sugar and
unsweetened cocoa, cut up honeydew and cantaloupe sprinkled with
blackberries, fancy mixed nuts, two Trader Joe's tea cakes (chocolate
marble and cinnamon streusel), TJ's milk chocolate caramels, coffee
(leaded and unleaded), tea, Hanson's sugar-free sodas, water,

I set up a coffee bar with all the sugar-free DaVinci syrups I have
(about 8 different flavors). That turned out to be the *big* hit of
the evening. All the "girls" wents crazy for the flavors (admittedly,
I have some strange ones, like egg nog, toasted marshmallow and
gingerbread, along with the more mundane flavors like white chocolate,
    vanilla, strawberry and English toffee).

Some of the women brought wine, which was shared by all but me (I'm
    not a drinker).

A lovely time was had by all, and I was very happy with some fruit and
nuts during the intermission. At the end of the evening, I wrapped up
the cake and gave it away, and gave away half the leftover fruit. The
leftover chocolate caramels came with me to work this morning and were
set out for anyone passing by (they're mostly gone now).

The only thing I've got left is the big bowl of nuts, so I think I'll
pack them up and stick 'em in the freezer for the next time. Several
of us are interested in a monthly or bimonthly "movie night."

And Gerard Butler was, of course, too gorgeous to be believed, Who
the hell would want wimpy Raoul when you've got a Phantom like that???

    Myra

P.S. I decorated my dining room to match the colors from the
"Masquerade" scenes - black, white, gold and silver, with a black
velvet cape and Phantom mask hanging on the wall behind the table. I
also lit a bunch of tea lights to give the living room a "lair" look.

Wow that sounds fun!!!!I would never have thought of decorating my home with

Can I go to your next movie night?

Geez, you ladies! For me, a night of entertaining is a bottle of whiskey,
six loaded ice cube trays, coke and water for setups, a deck of cards and
poker chips, and a sign pointing to the bathroom for the guys who can't
    remember.

  7. "raw sugar" is not low carb...

Most nuts are fine, and need not be stored away....

Congratz, however, for planning ahead for a reduced carb social event.

Several years ago, I used to play Mah Johng with four other women.
When we played at my apartment, I always made sure there was something
to eat or drink for everyone. When I played at other's homes, there
was nothing there I could eat OR drink (all carby snacks or

I hated that. Not because I was hungry or wanted to munch, but
because I thought it was *rude*. I was not keeping my WOE a secret.

Most nuts are fine, and need not be stored away....

Uh - they need to be stored properly or else they'll go stale. They
    are shelled nuts.

Congratz, however, for planning ahead for a reduced carb social event.

Several years ago, I used to play Mah Johng with four other women.
When we played at my apartment, I always made sure there was something
to eat or drink for everyone. When I played at other's homes, there
was nothing there I could eat OR drink (all carby snacks or
    caffeinated beverages).

I hated that. Not because I was hungry or wanted to munch, but
because I thought it was *rude*. I was not keeping my WOE a secret.

I agree with you, it's rude. I always make sure I have things that everyone
will enjoy. I am having a big Fiesta in a few weeks and I am making sure I
can accomodate everyone. I have vegetarians coming so I am doing the refired
beans vegetarian style and having lots of stuff so they can have a nice
meal. I am having options for LC guests, we can make Taco Salads etc but I
am also having all the typical carby stuff for the MAJORITY of people who
will be there that are not LC.

It's especially rude since you go out of your way to offer so may choices
and then they don't take your needs into consideration at all :o(

The again I always feel a little awkward when I am invited to eat somewhere
and they ask "Well, what can YOU eat?"

For the first time in about a decade, I decided to do some home
entertaining. I invited a bunch of women friends/co-workers over for
"An Evening Viewing of 'Phantom of the Opera' for Ladies Only."

That sounds soooo nice, Myra. Good example of how to entertain non-lc'ers.

I don't like to subject people to "fake food", even the things I like really
well myself, especially without their knowledge. For one thing, people react
so differently to artificial sweeteners. Something that tastes fine to me
may taste really weird to someone else. Plus... some people are adamantly
against use of artificial sweeteners, and would think they were being
poisoned if I slipped Splenda or another artificial sweetener into their
    foods.

I also make an exception for things that are clearly labeled, like the sf
DaVinci syrups. People know what they are getting and can use or avoid.
