I have been eager to switch to Speedplay for quite a while and took the plunge today. Having picked up a pair of X2's at one store I then swung by another to purchase some new road shoes (the pair I have been using to date have been mountain shoes).
I settled on Shimano SH-R151 road shoes. They felt comfortable and light and the bike store even took the time to fit the cleats for the X2s, which was nice.
Anyway, I got home, installed the X2s and went for a few lengths of the road outside our house. Aside from the predicted feeling of "being on ice" (which doesn't really feel like a bad thing - just weird), I took to the combination pretty quickly. Dismounting the shoe is an interesting process and one that will take a while to perfect. However...
On reading the Speedplay site tonight I am told that the X series pedals are NOT compatible with "carbon fiber" Shimano shoes because the base is too wide (the cleat seems to fit perfectly though).
Am I missing something? The SH-R151 has a "carbon fiber composite" base. So, is this one of the incompatible shoes for the Speedplay X2s? Frankly, I am not sure what to expect in terms of being able to dismount the pedal from the shoe. It SEEMS OK but perhaps I am missing a better experience with a different shoe.
Anyone used this combination?
Thanks.
