  1. I was cruising the photo gallery on xtri.com and saw something that was not familiar to me.

Several of the athletes had what looked exactly like a scrunchie ( a hair restraining device) around
    their arm at the elbow.

This was not a timing wrist band, and did not seem to be medical tennis elbow type constrictor.

    What could it be?

  2. on multi loop courses they are given at the completion of each loop to distinguish where competitors
    are in the race.

  3. i've done IMNZ twice, and there they were lap counters/ensurers. i think several races have gone to
this system if they do laps. the idea isn't very inviting, but i have to say that i didn't notice
    them after getting them on.

  4. The other method now in use has been adopted from the MTB scene and that is to score the athlete on
the fore arm with a texta pen (felt / marker pen)

Simple, effective and easy to count!

  5. Actually, my daughter was in a multilap kids' tri where they used the felt tip marker method, and
the volunter/lap marker on the bike leg inadvertently marked a broken line as the marker snagged a
bit on my daughter's skin (so it looked like she had completed 2 laps instead of one, since she had
2 marks on her arm). Hence, a subsequent volunteer insisted that my daughter turn in to T2 and begin
the run, even though she told them she wasn't done (8 year-old versus adult volunteer; guess who won
the argument?). The end result was that she was DQ'd for something that wasn't her fault.

I like the scrunchie idea much better.

I have to agree. That situation is not acceptable. I feel sorry for your daughter, bad experience in her early tri days!!

I have been in a race where markers were used. The official was at the outer apex of a u-turn. There were 4 or 5 of us that got to the turn in the 1st pack on the run and either the official did not anticipate the speed or was having a nap, but he had to chase us to mark us. He was yelling "wait" and "stop", yeah, thats what you are going to do! Go the scrunchie things:p
