Above is the link to the bike that my friend got recently. I talked to him he said it is a great bike, he uses it for commuting,. He seems to have a little more experience in the bike world, and sometimes just goes uncontrolled claiming how he reaches speeds of up to 50 km/h and maintains it on that bike on his way to work which is straight roads mainly. He seems relatively fit. I know little of bikes, I just occasionally get on a bike and casually ride for fun, and so, I have no clue as to what to make of his claim.
To all the people who have experience and would be able to answer this question, what do you think, looking at the details of thebike from the link above, do you really think he maintains that 50 km/h on straight roads for his near 10 km commute to work? Or is he simply blathering. Can that bike do that? Or do you imagine it actually does less than that?
Well, I don't know where you're from, but it's always easier for me to look at it in standard measurements, as I am American. But 50kph is roughly 35mph and 10k about 6 mi. From my experiences as a rider, holding that kind of speed is a very tough thing to do no matter what kind of bike you have. By all means, I'm not calling your friend a lair either. He might be a lot better rider than me. Probably what he means is that he can hit 50kph, but maintaining that kind of speed? Hard to say without ever having ridden with him before. 🙂
The possibility of riding at 50 kmh for any sustained period is highly unlikely, no matter what bike you ride. The record speed for a 1 hour ride is 42kmh, set by Eddie Merkx.

Actually more like 31mph. It is doable ( especially with a decent tailwind 😉 ); but lord knows a cyclist would never exaggerate. Maybe you should ask his girlfirend how well endowed she thinks he is compared to his estimate. :p

Boardmans record is no longer recognized because of his unorthodox bike and style.
So I guess any new records will have to be done on an early 1970's lugged steel frame. Well that's just dumb. Even Merckx' bike was a technological marvel compared to 24 years prior.

At first I was going to tell you it was BS, then I looked at the link, and yeah with that bike he is probably telling you the truth. If it were a lesser bike I would have my doubts though.

Huh?, Why would a mediocre equipped ride like that have any bearing on the veracity? 😕

It was a joke. There is no difference in speed between a [censored] bike and a great one if comparing a similar type of bike... I thought the link was included because it was a HPV or something.
If I were you, one way to tell, is offer to ride with the guy. You’ll know real soon if he is giving you a load of BS or if he is capable of riding fast. If he is hitting 31 mph (50km) on a flat road, then ask him what kind of speed he is getting while riding in the opposite direction (into the wind). OR… he may needs to re-calibrate his bike computer. If he doesn’t have a bike computer, then it is just BS.

In general… it’s not the bike… it’s the person supplying the power. The bike just goes along for the ride.

Ah. My sarcasm meter must have been on the blink! :o

No it is probably difficult to pick up on if you don't know the person posting, especially considering many of the wacko things people post here and are serious.
