I am about to finish up building a new road bike. I used pieces I just had lying around. I have 105 STI's, Ultegra FD, Dura Ace 7402 8spd RD, 8 speed cog and 8 speed chain. I just wanna use this setup as I get back into racing a little and can afford to upgrade to a 9 or 10 speed setup. I did buy wheels with a 9 speed hub and was able to put the 8 speed cog on that. Will I be screwed if I flat my rear tire in a race that has support? Will I at least be able to grind it out with one gear?

Yes, but maybe only the lowest gear in back.
If this is a priority to you, I'd suggest using a 9-speed chain, that will run fine with your 8-speed stuff, and also with a 9-speed wheel, though the indexing will be less than perfect running a 9-speed cassette with 8-speed shifters.

What's this about? If you are replying to a previous message it would be helpful to provide some context.
Older 105 STIs are 8 speed, newer ones (I think they started in 1999) are 9-speed.
I would expect them to go to 10 speed for the 2006 model year.

My question now is, will they shift the Dura Ace 7402, provided I am running an 8 speed cassette, chain, et al? If that will work, then I fully understand your reply to my original question. My second question was totally different from the first, in a way.

I think what he is asking about is the fact that the DA rder will not index with other 8-speed shifters.
To the OP,
The 8-speed DA rear derailleur will not index correctly when using 8 speed 105 shifters. The amount of cable pull and retraction is different. It will index perfectly with 9 speed shifters. Or you can use a 9 speed rear derailleur (much cheaper way to go).

Right now, I have a set of old 105 8 speed STI's, shifting a 9 speed Ultegra FD and an old, ca. 1993 7402 Dura Ace 8 speed RD. I am using and 8 speed cassette and an 8 speed chain. It works great. I do have to contend with a little chain grind up front on certain gear combinations. Perhaps the 9 speed chain will solve that? We'll see.
