Sounds like placebo effect to me. Said Hummer owner may get most of the personal benefit ("I feel
slightly guilty about wasting resources/spewing pollution so I'll get a bicycle"😉 without even
riding said bicycle (probably an x-Mart bike).

The road bike is ridden the same amount that the Hummer is used off-road. In other words, it's not.
