I have a shimano nine speed cassette on a shimano free hub. When I removed the cassette to switch it to another wheel, it was difficult to remove. This is because the cassette has made claw marks in the splines of the outer shell. Is this a problem that I should worry about? Better yet, is this something I can avoid in the future?

It will happen, paticularly with loose cog cassettes on an aluminum hub body. Ti bodies can be a bit soft too. Never had the problem with shimano or other steel bodies.

shimano 7800 freehub/cassettes have high profile/deep splines to beef this area up.tas1978 said:

Outfits that supply aluminum hub bodies on 8/9 shimano hubs to shave a few grams are doing people a disservice.
