I just purchased an early 80's Bianchi (made in Italy) and the seatpost supplied with it is not long enough. My old Fuji has a very long post so I thought that I would swap posts. When I tried, the Bianchi's post had to be forced into the Fuji frame (after spreading the split by the pinch bolt) and it looks like the split in the Bianchi frame is closed and the stem isn't tight.
Obviously there are differences in size of stems and seat tubes. Is this a metric/inch standard thing? Is this like English vs Italian bottom bracket threads? What are the standards for seat posts so I can get the right kind for the Bianchi?

The size of your Bianchi post should be marked close to the bottom near the minimum insertion mark. One has to make the assumption it was the correct size.
