  1. I know others have won 5 TdF's but has anyone else done them consecutively?

Great day for the U.S.P.S team today.

Yes..."Big Mig" (Miguel Indurain) rode for Banesto...won 5 in a row from 1991 to 1995 (I believe the
    yers are correct).

Yes again...a truely super day for the Posties!

  6. Just got a good look at the USPS jerseys during the TTT today.

What the hell's a "Berry Floor"?

Is there some kind of law that says you can't ride competitively unless you have signs on you that
    mean absolutely nothing?

I was going to write a snotty post about how Berry Floor was just a laminated floor tile company
named Berry, and how a name like Fassa Bartolo or iBanesto.com was much sillier, but you were
trolling, and besides, I was going to point you to berryfloor.com, but their site is flooded due to
    a traffic overload.

It appears that someone forgot to tell them that if you become title sponsor for the defending
champion of the Tour de France, then during the Tour de France, your web traffic might go up a bit.
In other words, at the time when they are best poised to exploit the massive amount of publicity
they paid dearly for, their website is completely hooped.

This is correct, but I recently read an interesting fact about consecutive victories. After winning
four consecutive Tours, both Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Mercks chose to skip the Tour the following
year! Eddy chose to concentrate on the Giro and Veulta in 1973, while Anquetil wanted to win several
    classics in 1965.

No, I asked what I thought was an honest question.

I hadn't thought about a guy named Berry starting a floor company.

One of my favorite jersey from years past said "GIS. TUC. LU." in big letters. I remember thinking
that that said it all, though I was never sure what.

In the 60s, the first Euro-Pro wannabee I ever saw came to work dressed in his faux Fabbery. The
most prominent logo on his jersey said, "Ideor".

Somebody asked him if that was the comparative or the superlative form of "Idiot".

Speaking of TdF clothing... ...do they have someone waiting at the finish line with a heat press,
team logos, and yellow jerseys in a range of sizes? Do they put the winner's logo on the jersey
du jour every day, or just for the finish? Do they provide a new jersey every day (assuming A
Certain Party keeps winning it)? The "4titude" poster on my wall (mooched from a branch of the
federal government) shows a pristinely clean jersey and USPS logo. Clearly it didn't get sweat,
bugs, and champagne spilled on it. Here in metro Detroit, most sports fans have clothing that
looks just like their favorite players' uniform tops; a lot of Red Wings jerseys are roaming the
shopping malls. Last night I was (gasp!) driving, and followed a non-vehicular Defective Cyclist
    (R) (TM) down the street, in his Full Postal kit. (He was giving that team a bad name.) The other
night while riding in my new T-shirt (I searched several different *.Marts for a bright,
Lance-lemon one) I got to thinking what the world would look like if cycling fans adopted this
trend. Fortunately, most of us look OK in tight stretchy lycra. Time for my favorite quote...

They actually have one of every combination of every jersey (green, white, yellow, polka) and every team in podium version (zipper in back, extra big to go over your real jersey), actual race jersey, and skin suit. Then whichever ones they use get recreated so there are no gaps for the next day. There was a short video in last year's Tour about the guy who did all that. So yes, there actually exist official yellow jerseys for teams that will never have them; those probably get destroyed after the race.

I don't know if they use a heat press or a silk screen, but yes, they print the jerseys on-site.

On last year's site there was a story about the guy doing the jerseys. The one you see on the
podium isn't really a jersey. It's like you suggest, done up at the finish line. The real one is
    ready the next day.

And he won 5 Giros. And he won the Giro and the Tour in the same year. He would have won more than 5
Tours, but a deranged fan kidney punched him one year during the race. All told, he won hundreds of
races - about a third of all those he entered.

I'm sorry, but even though they are great athletes, I just can't compare Indurain and Armstrong
to Eddy. They are TdF specialists only. They don't take chances on the other events. The
Cannibal, by contrast, went for EVERYTHING. He's the greatest of all time - for all time. That's
    just what I think.

That's not to take anything from Lance. I still want him to win 5 TdFs, and next year, the ultimate,
    never-attained prize: the 6th.

Yes, just like all the confiscated items at airports absolutely positively go directly to the
trash compactor and **no one** picks them over.

It's still apples and oranges - much like the home run records of today vs. Babe Ruth's time. Would
the Babe have hit as many HRs had he been facing Randy Johnson or Curt Shilling (my AZ bias showing)
regularly? Who knows - but they throw a lot harder than the pitchers of a century ago.

Compare the speeds of the TdF today to those in Eddy's day - much, much faster - and very little of
that speed is due to technology. The sport of cycling has evolved into a more competitive and
specialized sport - and sadly I don't think we'll ever see anyone dominate in all aspects again
(including winning the green, yellow and polka dot jersey in the same tour).

That said, I agree - he was the best.
