  1. I'm training hard and as it's the race season I'm quite fit and strong.

So I overtrained and got sick.... got a cold but not flue.... I'm scared as
hell to loose my fitnes so I stay in bed to recover from the cold... 1 week
    no riding....

Then... On Sunday I felt good and did a 50km ride at moderate pace with
springting all uphills and I felt stronger and realised the rest was good
    for me.... BUT...

On my way back from the mountain in town... I got a bit playfull and tried
to bunnyhop 'n small wall over a concrete driveway... well... I have never
really fallen hard and maybe I'm too confident.... but I fel so hard on the
tarmac that I didn't know what happened and I saw a million stars when I got
up.... I hurt myself badly - landed on my leg and shoulder.... Was shaking
    when I rode away.... SO....

After 2 days rest... I started riding again, cause we have a Winter Enduro
Series coming in one week and I was training to win.... now I feel like I
have lost all fitness.... Normally at 175bpm I start blowing.... but
today.... I am not blowing, only inhaling deeply and moderately, but my HR
is at 175 to 185 all the time....

Can anybody tell me why my HR is so high all of a sudden? And why I feel so
    weak?

My short sprints are just as fast... but it feels like some endurance is
    lost....

Can anyone with experience please tell me what you recommend me to do for
the next few days before Sunday's first leg of the Enduro.... (The enduro is
3 races of 35km each) I was hoping it would be a 35km sprint for me... but
    what now...

    Thank you
    Johannes

Are you for real? I smell a troll.

How about you forget the racing BS and ride your bike for fun. It's an
interesting concept and you'll be surprised at how "fit" you will be.

Nope. Too sincere. (And South African.)

Well, first things first -- he's signed up for the thing AND he's been
    training, so...

Just go ride it Sunday, trust your fitness level, AND ENJOY YOURSELF. (Oh,
and throw away the HR monitor.)

20 km EASY! each day until then. Just get loose, and warmed up-no
sprints, no killer climbs, and ferchristsake no bunny hops. This will
keep you relaxed and loose and let you heal. Don't ride with your
buddies, they'll try to beat you up so they can wax you on Sunday. Get
    some sleep too.
Did you see a doctor about hitting your head. Not a bad idea.

  7. Thank you for the suggestions... I'll take it easy... I guess the shock from
the fall had a lot of adrenalin ... cause I was shaking... and I'm pretty
    tough normally...

I like racing because I built my own bike... ppl stare at it... and it's
great to outride guys on Scalpels and other expensive and lightweight bikes.

I ride about 1.5 to 2 hours a day.... And believe me.... I HAVE fun....
racing is FUN - to me.... training is fun.... winning is fun.... not winning
is also fun... it's about grinding your budds as hard as you can... cause
you know they want to do the same... I also make sure that I do epic type
rides and I explore new places.

Here you can see how much fun I have... www.jgerber.com/mtb - this is my 8
month mtbking history with photos of rides.... I'll sort it later and add
descriptions... but I'll guess you'll get it that I HAVE FUN.

The scene here is totally different than in the US and EU, there's not that
high level of competition in most areas, so the racing thing is big locally,
everybody comes, each one riding for fun.

Recently I won the intermediate men at the first national I ever rode at,
and I've only been riding for 8 months. So yes... this competition thing
between the local riders is big....and helps develop strong riders... (well
the Elite's are still friggen way faster than me) :-)

I really feel for you when I read your weather reports... here we almost
always have clear skies, about 90% of a year.

I got a cold... cause I rode 100km flatout for training in cold weather with
a headwind in my face and I didn't eat anything along the way, my own
stupidity. a Week before that I rode the nationals in rain and guess my
system could not recover with my HR at one stage at 192 for several mins.
Max was 196. Think the cold started there already...

Take a resting HR reading. Best done just when you wake up and still in
bed. Get a baseline on this. Subsequent Resting HR readings above this
baseline is an indicator of overtraining or illness.

Have set rest days during the week. Getting adequate rest (gives the body
time to recover and repair) is just as important as training.

    KEEP IT FUN!!!!!!

    jg,

Overtraining can cause a high HR, there are ways to check it (looks like
some one mentioned it in a previous post). Dehydration can also cause a high
HR, not enough volume and the heart has to pump faster to deliver oxygen.
Dehydration can also cause loss of power, a 3% loss of total body weight
from dehydration can result in a 10% loss of power (from the studies I have
read). And lastly, given the bad luck you have had on the bike lately you
may have some sort of anxiety when you get on the bike?

Good luck with the racing... sounds like you have the right attitude about
    it.

  10. Thank you all for your good advice. Much appreciated. I sometimes overdo it,

Actually you got a cold because a virus got through your immune defenses
    and infected you.

Being cold doesn't create a cold. It CAN compromise your immune system
but it will not create a virus, or make you sick all on its own. There
needs to be something present that infects your system.

    Matt

PS conditioning will return. The more Miles/years you have under your
belt the better base you will have and the faster it will com back. Keep
    riding and have fun.

Take it easy the first day back on the bike. Start out slow. If you
feel good after warming up and feel that you can easily increase the
pace without much effort then do so. then if you are feeling good do a
harder second day, but nothing crazy. The week before a race is
generally not too intense. Pre-ride the course the day before the race
and don't be afraid to get a few attacks in. They help prepare your
body for race day. And for God's sake, RELAX. You sound so wound in
this post that someone could stuff a piece of coal up yer ass and find
a diamond the next morning. Your stress alone would kill your
performance much more than any cold every could. If you're only
concerned with winning then racing probably is not your thing.

A 35km sprint, huh? Well, if you were that fit before your cold, you
will still be that fit afterwards. I guess what's next for you is the
    podium, hey champ?

  13. Per jg:

Twice in my life I've *really* messed myself up longterm - i.e. permanent
damage. Both times, I worked out when I knew I had an active infection and I
belive that was the root cause of what followed.

I'd say you did one thing right by staying off the bike for a week.

Personally, I'd forget about the race and take it easy until my vital signs
were back to 100% normal. There'll be other races and other days if you just
wait this one out. OTOH if you damage one of your organ systems, your racing
    days may be over.

  14. A doctor's advice for severe overtraining can be several MONTHS away
from vigorous activity. Take it seriously.

Training while sick can easily make you more sick. A cold becomes
bronchitis, which becomes pneumonia. Always re-start moderately.

A hard fall might have caused some injury or other. Unlikely if you feel
absolutely no such symptoms, but then there's your high HR.

But as others have noted, you can take these things too seriously, with
stress raising your heart rate. Every endurance competitor, regardless
of their level, should track their baseline resting HR, as that's the
most reliable way for the individual to detect problems. If you're
stressed about your condition, that can throw the numbers off for a
while. But even that's temporary, since you usually just get bored with
    feeling stressed over it.

My advice is to take things easy before the race. As easy as you want,
just don't ride hard. Then ride the race, and watch your HR. Try to
disassociate yourself from the situation and treat your body like a
black box. If the numbers are out of sync with what you think they
should be, choose to race hard another day.

And in the future, make sure you have a strong aerobic base. If all you
do is mtb riding, you can do maybe too much short-burst anaerobic work.
Hard but steady riding will do you good, and it's hard(er) to overdo
    that kind of training.

It's worth posting your questions in rec.bicyles.racing. It's mainly
roadies, but they're actually pretty tolerant of the occasional dirt
rider that shows up. And there are some very knowledgeable people
    hanging around.

Really? I dont think i take that much notice about myself. Every few
months Ive added up all my 'candle burning at both ends' and make
myself sick for 2-3 days - seems a reasonable payback for 3 hours less
sleep a day, but nothing ever seems permanent. Can you explain the
cause/effect of your overtraining? The most i used to get was a few
days tired. When do you know you are overtraining?

    J

  16. With me personally:

Before I used a HR monitor, it happened frequently. I was riding as hard as
I can from training and came to a wall, where I would not go any faster and
felt tired and very tired constantly.

When I got the HRM I quickly discovered that I'm riding too hard when
training, i.e.. at 85% and above HR.

Then I started using a program that's basically one day 80% riding (various
gearing for different days) then a recover day at 60 to 75%, before the next
higher intensity day. With a 2hr ride on Saturday and 2hr on Sunday. Rest on
    Monday with stretch exercises.

Well I struggle to ride at 80%, it feels to me like I do nothing, but I
discovered it's the best to build my base and it does help.... I feel it
when I ride longer distances at 80%.

I immediately feel when I'm overtrained (not enough rest and recoverytime
between hard efforts) First thing I notice is a drop in speed and power and
increase in HR. I am too inexperienced to tell on the long run, I've only
    started riding 8 months ago.

About the sickness I don't know. Our average temp in winter is about 20 in
day and 25 in summer.... it's always clear sky (most of the time) and sunny.
I get a sore throat very easily when exposed to the slightest cold...
Sometimes I don't notice anything, but after the 3rd of 4th time I just get
sick. In the beginning I was coughing my lungs out after every race.... My
mates experience the same thing.... they get this bad cough and running nose
when racing.... I havn't had it for some time now and thought I'm strong
enough and fit... but suddenly it happened again.... or it copuld be that I
trained too hard and broke down my system enough to take a dip...

    Just what I experience.

  17. Pete,

Sounds rather unpleasant - think I'll be more careful from now on. I
often go out when im not top notch but I'll think more carefully next
time. I dont tend to get ill, generally, when i say make myself sick i
mean i feel under the weather, headaches and then im fine. Last time i
was REALLY ill was when i caught something from surfing in a bay with a
raw sewage outlet (wont do that again!) and i was out for 5 days with
continuous bathroom trips (couldnt have got to the doc without a
portaloo!) for both ends. Lost about 25lbs and that had me really
worried but it cleared up. Just drank stacks of water and slept while i
could. Before that - cant remember ever being properly ill all the way
back to about 6yrs old when i had chickenpox lol. Guess im just lucky.
Wont be pushing my luck frm now on though! ta for the heads-up. 🙂

    With me personally:

Before I used a HR monitor, it happened frequently. I was riding as

    hard as

    faster and

When I got the HRM I quickly discovered that I'm riding too hard when

Think I'll have a look into on of these, yesterday, with a headwind, i
    hit a wall lol somehow my home-time took 1:45 instead of 1:10 - i
couldnt get into the big ring. Maybe it was food, maybe i started too
    fast...not sure

I hope you were wearing a helmet. Try to keep your eyes on the road
    and focus on your surroundings.
