I thought I would kill two birds with one stone last night, and after cooking the pasta, poured the water over some eggs to hard boil. Left them there for 20 minutes, chilled them quickly, and just found out that theyare soft-boiled. Can soft boiled eggs be put back in hot water and continue cooking? They've been refrigerated since then, and I did cool them quickly.
Not sure what I did worng, altho when I started to rinse the skeddies, I might have gotten some of the cold water in there.

The 20 minute technique involves bringing the eggs and water to the boil and then letting them sit for 20 min. You skipped the first part where the eggs warm up as the water comes to the boil.

I'm assuming you opened one, found it soft boiled and refrigerated the rest? I would put them in cold water, bring that to the boil, turn off the heat and leave the eggs in until the water is no longer hot enough still to be cooking them. I can't think of any way to time it to avoid overcooking the eggs. Somehow I doubt they'll come out perfect, but I don't see any danger in it. -aem

yes - I had a similar problem when steaming them (see earlir thread). I would suggest you put the partly-done eggs into a pot, cover them with tap water, and then bring them to a boil. Turn off the heat/remove the pot from the burner - and since they are already partly cooked, I would let them sit in that hot water about ten minutes - more is probably ok.

Yes, you can cook them more. :-) Won't hurt them.
Personally, I'd prefer to use them soft! Yum! -- K.

It's worth a shot to try and cook them again. Nothing worse than cold soft-boiled eggs! If all else fails, there's egg salad, and my coworkers will eat just about anything that isn't nailed down<g>

What you did wrong was not bring them to boiling starting from cold water, and then remove them from the heat source to stand in the now not-boiling water. Just pouring boiled water over them won't do it -- oops, you know that already. The thought of re-cooking the egg sounds pretty disgusting to me, but maybe that's just me. Heck, try one.
