A 1% notch in a 16-gauge 1.2 mm wire would be 0.12 mm, or about 0.005 inches, roughly two sheets of paper. you are off a little. i've ridden 1000s o'miles w/ a few sizable notches, 20-30% (? didn't measure them). [censored] in the form of dropped chain happens.
