For me the staples are fairly simple. Fresh : Onions, tomatoes,
mushrooms, limes, celery, potatoes, garlic, shallots, various peppers,
and whatever else looks in season. Pantry and/or fridge : Pastas, rice,
canned tomatoes and beans, mustards, vinegars, herbs and spices, flour,
sugar, brown sugar, honey, cocoa, butter, oils, olives, pickles, other
condiments, several kinds of hot sauce, peanut butter, various jams and
jellies, horseradish, bread and crackers.
Aside from the basics, I buy odd things and whatever is needed to fix
it. We almost always have some kind of cheese, be it sliced american,
brie, assiago, fontina, edam, gorgonzola, or whatever. Frequently we
have green onions, radishes, and some kind of salad green, not always
green.
Yesterday I had feta cheese stuffed belgian endives on the grill,
lightly coated with canola oil.
