    Recently, the pharmaceutical company Bayer was forced to recall its
    fluorinated cholesterol-lowering drug Baycol (Cerivastatin) as it had
    caused deaths and serious adverse health effects worldwide.1, 2, 3
    Baycol had been found to cause muscle destruction and wasting-a
    condition known as rhabdomyolysis-and displayed compounded toxicity
    when used with other drugs. It had been linked to at least 31 deaths.

    The adverse reactions documented with Baycol were largely identical to
    those of numerous other fluorinated drugs-all of which had been
    withdrawn from the market in recent years. 3

    As a result of the current anthrax scare, another fluorinated drug
    called Cipro has received extensive media coverage and the name has
    become familiar to millions almost overnight. As soon as the first
    cases of anthrax resulting from suspicious mail became known, there
    were wide reports of a hectic run on this drug.

    Mass hysteria seems present as governments, pharmacies and individuals
    everywhere are stockpiling Cipro. Pharmacies are reporting record
    sales, and on-line prescription services and Internet sites are selling
    the drug at more than $7.00 per pill.

    People everywhere-hyped into believing their flu-like symptoms are
    caused by anthrax exposure and misinformed by irresponsible media
    reports-are taking Cipro. Worse yet, they are giving it to their
    children.

    WHAT IS CIPRO?
    Cipro is ciprofloxacin, a fluorinated quinolone, belonging to a class
    of fluorinated antibiotics which also include enoxacin, fleroxacin,
    temafloxacin, grepafloxacin, norfloxacin, sparfloxacin, tosufloxacin,
    lomefloxacin and ofloxacin.

    Ciprofloxacin has been in use since 1987 for a variety of other
    indications and is the most widely used fluoroquinolone in humans and
    animals worldwide.4

    In 2000, the FDA approved its use as a treatment for inhalational
    anthrax under its "accelerated approval" regulations.5 The FDA had
    actually taken the unusual step of urging Bayer- the sole
    manufacturer for all countries except India-to file for such
    approval, supposedly in order to protect the public from future
    terrorist attacks. The US Department of Defense had already ordered
    reserves of Cipro during the 1991 Gulf War.6

    ADVERSE EFFECTS
    Temafloxacin and grepafloxacin are two other fluoroquinolones now
    withdrawn from the market because they had caused severe liver and
    renal damage-and deaths, just like fluorinated drugs from other,
    different classifications, such as Baycol.3 The same information also
    exists for Cipro.

    Fatal liver failure associated with ciprofloxacin was reported in the
    Lancet in 1994.7,8

    Ciprofloxacin has been implicated in several cases of acute renal
    failure and is the fluoroquinolone most established to cause such renal
    dysfunction.4,9,10,11

    Now., when will you run a ban campaign against use of chlorine in any
    food because the dangers of PCB? I look forward a campaign against
    legalizing sale of NaCl because PCB are dangerous.

  3. Actually, it is not the same logic at all. The specific individual
    drugs in question were named clearly. If there was a sweeping statement
    against *all* fluorinated drugs, it is because *all* have shown some
    disturbing properties.

    They are not necessarily being villified simply because of their
    Fluoride or Fluorine component, but they just happen to have the
    Fluoride and/or Fluorine component in common and, unfortunately, they
    all seem to have severe and similar side effects.

    One can't assume that a drug will be bad simply because it contains a
    given compound or element. But if every drug that contains that
    compound or element happens to cause all kinds of similar problems
    and/or side effects, then one must be very cautious with all similar
    drugs.

    And I am still waiting for you to provide scientific evidence that
    fluoridation of water supplies resolves 100% of caries incidences. Why
    are you so attached to the idea that fluorides are beneficial?
    Especially in light of the fact that you have nothing whatsoever to
    support your position. It seems that your logic is that someone in a
    white lab coat once said that fluoride prevents all caries and that is
    that. Well, that is not enough.

    Your assumption is that all other drugs don't have problems with them and
    that is wrong. To point out idiocyncratic drug reactions is not very
    helpful.

    What about apatite? It should be really bad for your health following
    your statements. It is a fluorine compound. Found in teeth enamel and
    bone.
    (I cured a starting osteoporosis by increasing fluorine intake in
    order to form more apatite in bone. The doctor was right in diagnosis
    of fluorine deficiency and not so much too low calcium intake)

    Fluoride participates in many aspects of calcium phosphate formation
    in vivo and has enormous effects on the process and on the nature and
    properties of formed mineral. The most well-documented effect of
    fluoride is that this ion substitutes for a column hydroxyl in the
    apatite structure, giving rise to a reduction of crystal volume and a
    concomitant increase in structural stability. In the process of enamel
    mineralization during amelogenesis (a unique model for the
    cell-mediated formation of well-crystallized carbonatoapatite), free
    fluoride ions in the fluid phase are supposed to accelerate the
    hydrolysis of acidic precursor(s) and increase the driving force for
    the growth of apatitic mineral. Once fluoride is incorporated into the
    enamel mineral, the ion likely affects the subsequent mineralization
    process by reducing the solubility of the mineral and thereby
    modulating the ionic composition in the fluid surrounding the mineral,
    and enhancing the matrix protein-mineral interaction. But excess
    fluoride leads to anomalous enamel formation by retarding tissue
    maturation. It is worth noting that enameloid/enamel minerals found in
    vertebrate teeth have a wide range of CO3 and fluoride substitutions.
    In the evolutionary process from elasmobranch through enameloid to
    mammalian enamel, the biosystems appear to develop regulatory
    functions for limiting the fluoridation of the formed mineral, but
    this development is accompanied by an increase of carbonate
    substitution or defects in the mineral. In research on the cariostatic
    effect of fluoride, considerable emphasis is placed on the roles of
    free fluoride ions (i.e., preventing the dissolution and accelerating
    the kinetics of remineralization) in the oral fluid bathing tooth
    mineral. Fluoride also has been used for the treatment of
    osteoporosis, but much still remains to be learned about maximizing
    the benefit and minimizing the risk of fluoride when used as a public
    health measure.
