21 gears in all - 2/5 2/6 and 2/7 all make progressively more
whirring, with 2/7 sounding like it's not in properly. Oddly though,
3/7 is fine, as is 1/7. 2/4 downwards sounds and feels fine too. I
haven't got the full tech details on the model (could get it I'm
sure), but it's Shimano.

Essentially, the limit screws should be set up properly and it's
unlikely you'll need to mess with them, so the main thing is the barrel
adjuster on the cable.

It's most unlikely you need to do anything with the front deraileur
unless it is actually impossible to shift onto the big or small
chainring, or the chain keeps falling off.

It sounds like your front derailleur is not quite in the right place
and is touching the outside of the chain in the higher (rear) gears in
2nd.

If your gearchange is decent quality there'll be something to twiddle
where the cable enters the shifter on the handlebars. Twist it to make
the front derailleur move out slightly. If you don't overdo it it
should still shift OK to 1st and 3rd.
