I did that trip with my husband, but without the train and added
Zakinthos and Crete to the ride.

It's 80 slides, 2 seconds per slide. Slow to load, so don't bother if
you have dial-up.

If you have some old old Bicycling magazines around, I have an article
and photos in there describing the trip. We did things so cheaply that
the article pretty much paid for the vacation.

The train was for lack-of-time reasons only. Cycing along the coast
Chorintos-Patras is quiter time consuming as constant strong head-wind could
realy slow you down .
Nice slide show !

I am drooling!! I was planning a tour of the Peloponnese for a while
now - I was just waiting for the right time. Well I thought the time
had come this August. Unfortunately, I need to defend my thesis at the
end of August, if I am to graduate this fall. Thus, I have canceled
all my plans for that trip.

Anyways, I know the land since my dad comes from a small village close
to Pylos, in Messinia, and I have visited a few times so I know what to
expect in terms of terrain. However, I was wondering how was the riding
in the narrow roads in the Peloponnese and how did the drivers behave.

amazing pictures, I think you have captured certain aspects of the
terrain, people, and life that I was starting to forget 🙂

I am wondering what was the year these pictures were taken? If I am to
guess I will say it must be between 1985 and 1995.

You're exactly right. It it was in the middle of that time. Of all the
bike trips we took to France, Scotland, England, Ireland, Portugal and
Greece, it was Greece that we remember most fondly. Being in May, we
required no reservations, but stopped at 3 or 4, cleaned up and went
restaurant *shopping.* We were taken often to the kitchens and given
tastes of everything which we washed down with ouzo and later returned
to our favorite for dinner.

I cycled in Peloponsus (that's what they call it) with my wife and some
friends. We got a hydrofoil to the tip from Piraeus and then cycled
along the coast to half-way up along the west coast, into the middle,
up to the Bay of Corinth and back to Athens.
It's lovely, the cycling was wonderful. The food was not very good, and
I love good Greek food. The people were very nice, but none of us had
any Greek at all, a disadvantage.

I am glad to hear that everybody who cycled there really liked it. So I
guess my concern about the narrow roads and bad drivers should not be
much of a worry. Of course I understand I still have to be careful 🙂

BTW, most Greeks, call it Peloponnisos ( Πελοπόννησος in Greek 🙂 ) -
its hard to provide you with an appropriate pronanciation in a written
form. However, the way you presented above may still be used in a dialect.
