reports talk of broken ribs and punctured lung. Lets hope there are no

It did look very bad, but latest news is that he's OK

It looked like his head and maybe shoulder hit the guardrail. Ouch.
Supposedly he isn't in too bad condition, at least according to Graham
Watson's site.

That's another perfect example of the misunderstanding of just how hard
and dangerous our sport is. We're bringing along a junior who's a
serious athlete. Going to start as a fullback and linebacker this year
on a good HS football team, and he's finding out just from watching
races like Jiminy Peak and our training rides how hard this sport
really is.
I think this kid will be a solid racer especially in cross since he's
really pumped about that, but the fact is that football will pay the
college bills, so he'll do what he can while concentrating on football.
The other thing that's against him is his racing age is 16, and here if
you want to win that means cat3.
It just seems to be impossible to get people to understand the reality
of cycling, because any doofus can ride to the bar after they get
zapped with a DUI and think it's just about the same.

participants have to down a beer while sprinting. I'm sure livedrunk
bracelet supplier Ryan Cousineau could come up with some more variations

"The doctor arrived a minute or so later and he told me to move away because
he said Alberto didn't look very good. He put Alberto on his side, on the
asphalt and he put his fingers in his mouth and freed his tongue and he
yelled to the ambulance that he needed a Guedel tube so that he didn't
choke... When they put the tube in a whole lot of blood flowed out of his
mouth and he started to breathe and then they put him on oxygen." .........

........Alberto Lopez de Munain was diagnosed with a hydropneumothorax caused
by nine broken ribs, a broken left collar bone, a broken shoulder blade,
damage to the left shoulder as well as grazes and cuts to his back, knees
and face. He is conscious, in a stable condition and out of immediate
danger, as he is getting drainage to improve the hydropneumothorax.
Euskaltel-Euskadi expresses their deep gratitude to the Giuseppe Iannelli
hospital staff, the race organisers and the local authorities for their
fabulous treatment and support.

said the rider didn't breathe for 30 seconds, and needed the manoeuvre with
the mentioned tube. It was the worst crisis he experienced in 23 years.

Yuchh... often you think these guys are dead and are amazed to find
out they actually survived.

Anyone know why Didier Rous bailed on the first day? I saw he DNFed
and was never able to find out why.No mention of a crash.

I've seen worse after a bar fight, so the appearance isn't that bad
IMO (he may look worse today, after a day of swelling and all that).
The doctor did say it was one of the worse he had seen, so it may have
been pretty serious medically. I'm guessing Cook County ER wouldn't
flinch much, though.

Not really. Its a major event. Every time I watch Le Mans (with Steve
McQueen and no plot), one of the items of interest is the hospital
van. Sure those things are improved since...
