Its surely frustrating to see all the expensive heartburn prescriptions
being written. We used to by Rolaids in the 24 pack at Costco. Haven't taken
ONE since we started low carb. But, you never hear things like that from the
'experts' in the media. Wish there were some way to get the word out to
people. The drug companies would throw a tizzy if people realized the truth.

ignore it and opt for a drug instead. -
One of the many reasons I went LC was to try to fix a stomach problem I'd
been having for almost 2 years. Basically, I had a constant stomach ache,
but no acid reflux. It felt like someone had punched me in the stomach
with something sharp. It didn't matter if I had just eaten or not, it was
always there. And I had on average 3 bouts of the runs a month, sometimes
so bad I had to take time off work. I had every GI test they could think
of (boy, those REALLY aren't fun!) and even a full body scan. They
couldn't find anything wrong with me. So my doc put me on Nexium because
he just didn't know what else to do. It seemed to dull the pain for a few
months, but didn't fix it completely. Then it just started to get worse
even with the Nexium.
After going LC for a couple of weeks, the pain started to get duller again.
I weaned myself off the Nexium and resigned myself to living with whatever
was wrong with me. Then I accidentally found something on the net saying
that many people have stomach problems, including acid reflux, because of a
LACK of stomach acid, not too much. The symptoms they described were
exactly what I'd been going through. I started taking Betaine HCL tablets
with my main meals, and everything cleared up within days!
So the moral of the story is, doctors are conditioned to think in terms of
blocking stomach acid when the problem may be the exact opposite. I'm sure
there are a lot of people out there that don't know this and are on acid
reducers when the opposite treatment would help them.Perdu said:
So true. I have a nice collection of dust gathering bottles of Rolaids,
Tams, Zantac, Pepcid and the like. It is amazing now that you mention. I'd
not had one in many months. Nor was it ever on my mind.-----

online (I've had reflux for YEARS, ever since I was pregnant with my
daughter); one of the things they say to do is to take a spoonful of vinegar
when the heartburn starts to see if it helps or not. I started taking ACV
(Apple Cider Vinegar) from the health food store - not the distilled kind,
but the kind with the mother in it - with similar results to what you're
reporting 🙂.

I'm pleased that you figured this out and that it's working for you. I did
have temporary relief if I had a glass of very dry white wine with dinner,
but didn't make the connection until I found the info online. Since I
don't want to drink wine or vinegar with every meal, the Betaine HCL
tablets are the way I decided to go.on Mon, 9 May 2005 08:33:32 -0500, "Sherry" <[email hidden]>
