  1. Returned Thursday from a 10 day Mallorca training camp....bloody
fantastic! Average temperature over the period was 25, with a high of
29 in the latter part of the week. Got a cyclists-tan, despite taking
factor 15 with me during the day and reapplying at lunchtime. Just need
to get some sun wearing just my arm and leg warmers for a few days to
    even it up a bit!

I stayed at my usual hotel, the Puerto Azul in Porta Pollenca and yet
again it delivered over and above the goods. I rode for 9 out of the 10
days, taking a Saturday as a rest day following a 43rd birthday (not
mine!) celebration on the Friday night (plenty of Carbo loading that
night, unfortunately of the wrong kind!). I've told you about the hotel
before, with the basement racked out with about 100 rubber coated wall
hooks for which they supply a chain and padlock, there is a maintenance
stand and a workbench. We went 1/2 board and the food was excellent,
plenty of low fat choices, plenty of pasta dishes...and loadsa ice-cream!

Total distance ridden was 846km, average speed was 26.60kph and total
ascent was 7200 metres. We alternated routes allowing a fast flat
route one day followed by a mountainous climb the next. Longest climb
was 'Look' at about 26km, best climb (!) was Sa Colobra at 20km, which
you descend to the base before turning around to climb back up. The
climb took me 41 minutes and I utilised my 39/25 for about 40% of the
time. A companion climbed it on a 21, it took him 49 minutes and he
said "never again", commenting that his speed dropped to 4mph on
    numerous occasions.

The hotel is now base to a cycle hire company that rent out bikes of a
very high standard. They have a range of all sizes, specs include
carbon and aluminum frames, Campag Chorus, and 2005 Shimano Durace
groupsets. I spent quite a while talking to the owner Bruce (a Brit)
who is a cyclist. Basically you just take your clothing and pedals,
everything else including tubes, pump etc. is supplied. The bikes were
meticulously maintained (he was there every evening servicing and
cleaning them), and I am certainly going to consider renting next year.
Just in case your interested, his web site is: www.procyclehire.com.

The only bummer of the holiday was when landing back at Luton. There
were 9 riders that I travelled with, and 3 bike boxes (including mine)
were badly damaged when then appeared with the rest of the luggage.
I've filled in a claim form and will see how it goes.

This morning I raced and done terrible! I remember doing the same in
2004, you really need a couple of weeks rest from a camp before you get
your form back... which is hopefully improved.

    Roll on next year!

    That's an excellent idea.

    Wasn't RyanAir was it?

Mate of mine took his road bike to France last month, and came back
with the rear derailleur bent to f***, one of the rack eyeslets ripped
out of the frame, and the front large chain wheel bend in by 1/2 inch.
1/2 doesn't sound like that much, but it's a hell of a lot, imagine
the clout it took to bend it that much?

Another mate of mine was having a beer at Stanstead watching the
planes being unloaded and the bikes thrown from the plane onto the
tarmac.....yes, thrown from the luggage holding directly onto the
    ground.

As the 'mericans say: go figure.

Let us know how the damage claim turns out would you, and which
    airline it involves.

Glad you had a good time.

That's what I thought. Not exactly cheap, but you are talking about
£3000 worth for the top models. Bruce also mentioned that some people
cannot afford this sort of bike at home so it's a chance to ride "what
the pros use"...I hadn't though of that until he mentioned it. I won't
risk taking my Litespeed out there so strip down my Winter bike and use
that. I'd rather climb on a 17lb carbon bike than my 22-23lb jobbie.
What with the excess luggage charge, the Palma to Pollenca transfer fee
(won't take bike box's on the coach (not 9 anyway!), and the damaged box
    it seems quite inviting.

No, it was Brittania. Funny thing is my bike box has made 8 trips over
the past 3 years including France, Mallorca, mainland Spain, Germany and
a 3 stop long haul to Hawaii. It's been damaged twice, both by
    Brittania back from Mallorca.

That's the sort of treatment mine looked as if it had had, 2 wheels on
the bottom had cracks around them as if it had been dropped from a
height onto the wheels. My friends VK box was completely wrecked...2
wheels has caved in, the handle was smashed off and if it wasn't for
straps and gaffer tape (which we all use) the bloody thing would have
burst open. The trouble is, at £350 (my Scicon) their not exactly cheap
are they. Another fellow traveller on his first trip out there used a
cardboard box, well padded out with bubble wrap...he was OK. Makes you
wonder what's the best route sometimes.

Interesting read. There's a forum on the Puerto Pollensa website with a
section on walking and cycling - I bet the readers there would find it
    interesting, too.

    <http://www.puertopollensa.com/>

I'm going to Palma in a couple of weeks time, and was thinking of taking
my Brompton with me, but it's probably too much bother, and I'll not
really need it. I'll be in the city for a week, and then in PP for the
following week, but I'll have a rented car then.

My parents were there at the same time as you. My mother emailed me to say
there were loads of cyclists there.

I'm very keen to get my mother (71) and father (78) on one of those
    Centaur equipped T-Mobile bikes. ;-)

May join them next year ;-)

  7. The problem is that airlines use handling agents at all airports. The
chances are that even though you might have a choice of flying 4 or 5
airlines it could well be the same agent that loads and unloads the
    aircraft particuarly at Spanish airports.

But the airlines themselves may well have very different attitudes
towards claims for damage caused by their agents.

RyanAir, for example seem, to be of the "[censored] off and stop bothering
us" school of customer care. Other airlines may have a completely
different outlook, and it's worth knowing about those who will take
responsibility for running over your bike with a fork lift truck.
