  1. I love bicycling, and it's getting tougher and tougher to ride. I have degenerative arthritis in my hip, and will have to get a hip replacement. I'm trying as much as I can to not have it, cause im only 37, and want to keep cycling. So my question is this; does anyone here on the cycling forums ride with an artificial hip or know someone who does? I'm very frightened that I will not be able to ride like I can now, I love to climb hills. But like I said the pain is getting so bad, it's almost to the point of my HAVING to get it replaced, so any information is greatly appreciated.

I had my left hip replaced when I was 37. I previously had surgery to fuse that hip when I was 15 due to a degenerative condition that put me in intense pain. After that first surgery , I was no longer able to ride a bicycle. After my hip replacement, part of my physical therapy was to ride a stationary bike. My doctor recommended riding a bicycle as being one of the better forms of exercise for those with artifical hips. I currently ride on the road about 150 miles a week and am training for Aids/LifeCycle, a ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles over 7 days. All of this would not have been possible without my hip replacement. If you are in pain, it will help. With proper therapy you will get back most of your flexibility. Having a hip replacement only changed my life for the better. I am am 46 now and see my doctor once a year for follow up. He tells me I am doing great and my hip could last another 20 years. I understand how scary it can be, but this surgery can truly help. In many ways, I am in the best shape of my life.

    Good luck, and keep riding!🙂

Everyone I know who had a hip done was MUCH better after than before. (I didn't have mine replaced, just 2 compression srews after a crash -- if the break was an inch higher, I would have lost the hip). if it helps older folks as much as I have seen, it will help you as an athlete. Just don't rush the recovery too fast -- your skills will come back in time.

  4. i feel your pain
i was begging for a new hip a few years ago. doc laughed at me cause i am not in a wheel chair and on morphine. i manage my pain now with LIQUID glucosimine regular cycling and a physio routine. the stretches take about 20 minutes and it is so worth it. sometimes i can go through the whole day with out being in that bad pain. good luck. and do not fear a new hip cause it will be the end of your pain.

  5. I had my hip replaced seven years ago and have thankfully been able to ride with no problems. You should be able to bike just fine. I ride both road and mountain bikes.
