Ken, the reason that those two cities are so depressed is that they
both have big snowbird populations. Being around a bunch of retired
yankees will do that to you. Those of us who love it in Florida think
the heat and humidity is great. It chases the riff-raff back north.

Another hypothesis: The unhappy people all move to happenin' places
like Los Angeles, thinking that a change of environment will help them
out. People who realize that happiness is not based on location stay

Man. I grew up in Fresno (#7), and have seen Jersey City (#3). Odd

Hey I kind of resemble that remark. I am not old or retired, but I did live
"up north" for most of my life. But I have been in the "oven state" for
about 6 years, and I am still not fond of it.

Yeah but I can't ride my bike on I-95! And seeing as how I am car free my
bicycle is my main transport method, but I am considering relocating, all
you longtime Floridian can enjoy your state all you want, my opinion is just
that mine, you can agree with it or not, I don't care one way or the other.

Tell me about it. I spent 8 years in Vegas hearing about how it had
one of the, if not the, highest suicide rate in the nation. Yet, it
doesn't even rank (in the bottom). I wonder if they reckon these rates
based on point of origin, and not point of act (ie, a person who is a
resident of Portland OR visits Vegas, blows his life savings, OD's on
tylenol, and the suicide is credited to Portland).

I live in Jersey City and would agree with that assesment. With
residential real estate selling for $600 a square foot in my backdoor
neighborhood to Manhattan, it's definitely not a "low-earnings
population" as another poster suggested.

On the other hand, I'm surprised Newark, NJ is not on the top 20 most
depressing cities list.
