Coupla Q RE: Chainline, BB spacers, etc....

  1. As prep for the Death Ride I moved my FSA Compact crankset over to my
    primary bike (Campy 10). Afterdoing so, I noted that I no longer had
    access to the eighth cog when in the small ring on the front due to the
    chain rubbing on the inside of the big ring in the front.

    This doesn't seem right as the smaller rings mean a slightly less
    angled chain (distance from cogset to crank rings is slightly greater).
    Does the chainline for the FSA Energy compact differ from that for the
    Campy Record?

    I obtained some bb spacers (1, 1.5, and 2 mm) from Loose Screws to try
    to remedy this situation. Upon looking at them,however,I am just a
    little concerned.

    The radial width (not edge on, but rather the face-on width of the
    "torus"😉 is fairly small. Certainly not the thickness of my bb shell,
    maybe half. Is this ok? I would think having the outer half of the
    lip of the drive side BB cup unsupported would be less stable than full
    contact as without the spacer. Possibly unacceptably so?

    Same chainline and remember the difference between the 50t and 34t.
    BUT, this is a non-issue that requires no correction. You will affect
    the front der shifting and the chainline, that should have a line
    between the chainrings centered on the middle of the cogset, this line
    parallel to the top tube.

    It is NOT a problem requiring spacers. A look at a gear chart will show
    that if you are in the small ring and 8th cog down, big ring and 2-3
    cogs bigger(center of thd cogset-ish) will be the same ratio. Ya got
    lever mounted, easy to use shifters, I suggest ya use 'em.

    Two observations...

    First, the spacers I've received from LS were the same OD as the
    flange on a Shimano UN53 BB, so unless they've changed the dimensions,
    the face width should be OK. Numbers would make this easier to
    evaluate than invisible comparisons.

    Second, beware of trying to shim a BB. It sometimes has side issues.
    Not all left cups or bushings will go deep enough into the BB shell to
    allow the BB to be shimmed to the right very much; not at all in some
    cases. Also, if the left crank's clearance with the chainstay is very
    close, spacing the BB rightward may result in a collision there.
    *Usually* there's enough room that this is a non-issue, but it's still
    wise to check.

    That said, I've done it a couple of times in instances where it would
    work, and had no problems from it.

    HAD Q RE SPACERS PURCHASED:

    The width of the torus is about 1 -1.5 mm. Doesn't seem right. The
    text on the web page said "freewheel/BB spacers". Did I get the wrong

    ALSO WORRIED ABOUT AMOUNT OF CUP THREADS:

    The FSA BB DS cup goes in at least 1.5" or so - I can't imagine having
    issues with that. Additionally, there is about 1 mm of exposed ND side
    cup.

    ADDITIONALLY MENTIONED LEFT CRANKARM CLEARANCE:

    There is plenty of crankarm clearance on the left - looks like about
    1.5 cm or so - and I was only gonna bump the crankset over 1 - 2 mm.
    Not a great deal, but it allows me access to the same number of cogs as
    my Record crankset before the chain hits the big ring.

    Thanks, Werehatrack. BTW, what are the environmental conditions that
    turn you from a mere mortal to a supporting device for a chapeau?
