Think of the feelings of the council official who came up with it when they are criticised. Their
mindset probably works something like this:
1) Roads are for motor vehicles, which must be speeded up as much as possible in order to make
society better and bring heaven on earth.
2) Cycles impede the free flow of motor vehicles, so their drivers are delaying heaven on earth.
3) We must get these dammed scroungers out of the way so they don't slow the flow of motor vehicles.
4) I have seen some design guidelines from those lentil munching green freeloaders Sustrans. I
didn't bother to read the text, but I did look at the pretty cartoons.
5) Sustrans are some sort of cycling group, so their drawings obviously show facilities for really
fast cycling. When these layabouts pay road tax we might just provide such gold plated things.
6) Until then we'll avoid the Sustrans over-engineering and reduce their illustrations to something
more in keeping with what cyclists deserve.
7) When the scheme was implemented I drove along to it. Seemed fine to me. I even got out of my car
to look at it and check that it was alright. What are they complaining about?
