Messenger bags are not for me. But maybe you're in a area where something around the body and shoulder is needed. I used a Jandd Briefcase pannier and liked it a lot. I'd use it again when needed. I like Carradice seat bags, and the sqr is good for fast off and on the bike.
Use what you like. Everyone is different. Let your comfort guide you.
