As well as suitable frame and fork mountings you should consider the
following:
Do your wheels have disc specific hubs? If not you'll need to shell out for
new wheels or at least new hubs and spokes if you're capable of building
your own wheels.
Do you have seperate brake levers and shifters? If not you'll have to shell
out for new shifters.

To warrant the cost and aggro of upgrading to discs means by-passing cables

TBH it might (will) be more cost effective to buy a new bike, unless yours
is particularly up-market, especially if you can wait until late summer when
'05 models will be sold off at lower prices.

And I'm speaking from experience after undergoing the exercise some 18
months ago, in my case it was just economic to upgrade as I preferred the
fun of building my own wheels to fit to a bike with components I liked ,
selecting the fork I wanted etc. rather than the aggro of selling it to
finance a new one.

And it was worth every penny :-)

You can but it'll be expensive and difficult (new front forks, special
hard to find torsion arm mount for the rear. Instead why not think of a
set of Magura hydraulic rim brakes? They really are a world apart from
V-brakes and they don't involve a whole load of expense and hassle to
fit. HS33's can be had for about £60-70.
