hippy did.. but hippy was up until 4am Saturday and, oh looky, it's now
3am Sunday! I just got home and have to get up in <3hrs to ride the
BR!!! I was thinking of using it as a test run for the EuroTourer..

Could I really be arsed though? Beer, bourbon and no sleep don't really
help stave off those cramps.. stay tuned..

  12. Seeing BT said he was going and I had said I would be there I figured I
better at least turn up (feel guilty BT??).

The radar looked a bit miserable but it was moving away so I figured i
could always do the short ride from last week. At 7:30 there was no one
at Doncaster but me so I headed off for my own ITT. There was only
drizzle but it didn't look like letting up but I figured I could put up
with that. Then I saw a cyclist come from the opposite direction and
realised it was Hippy. He thought about pretending he didn't see me but
turned around and joined me anyway.

The drizzle kept up till Warrandyte but seemed to have stopped by then
so off came the rain jacket at the bus stop/start timing point. I'd made
the rash decision during the week to do a Babe Ruth, point to the
stands, home run call on breaking my PB. So it was time to get serious.
Previous PB was 16:50 but I was aiming for 16:30. Hippy took off up the
road while I settled into a rhythm. I knew to not go too hard at the
start but felt pretty good and was mostly in the middle chainring. At
the second Reduce Speed sign (my split checkpoint) I glanced down at the
watch. I wanted something under 10:00 which was my split when I did the
PB. Holy [censored], it read 9:25! I'd probably gone out too hard but figured
if I could hold it together I'd definitely have a PB.

On the second half I can confidently say I went HARD and made sure I did
not look at the HRM. On the last bend which is a few mins from the top I
checked the time and realised not only had I held it together to make
16:30 I may even break 16:00. That last rise I rode as hard as I ever
have. About 10 metres from the end I had to sit in the seat and roll to
the end. I was going to be disappointed if I missed 16:00 but I was
spent. Rolled to The Rock where Hippy was waiting, looked at the watch
and nearly fell off the bike. Staggered around for a few minutes before
I could breath again (I suspect Hippy thought I was gonna die, I know I
did). I was about as happy as a man who simultaneously wants to spew and
curl up into the foetal position can be. Final time was 15:40!!!!!

Thanks for coming Hippy, I'd hate to break a PB like that and have no
    witnesses/volunteers to call the ambo.

    DaveB

  13. w00t!

More than a minute off your PB? That's some serious personal improvement! I
don't want to think about how long that ride would probably take me (I
commute, not compete). So which ward are you in if anyone wants to visit?

Awesome work DaveB... that is one hell of a chunk off that PB!!

I'll post a race report of the Kew TTs in another thread...

    Damn.

So how were you for the rest of the ride? 🙂

I'm thinking of getting out of bed about now...

I'm still catching up on two weeks worth of sleep.

  16. Yay Dave! 15:40 is great. Now do you see the evils of running?

  17. Outstanding effort Dave, great stuff....gees at this rate, everyone will be chasing you before too long, and as Blah said no running 😄

  18. Hey Dave, just looking at your C2M entry, your not a recreational rider, your a D-grader 😉

No probs dude! Glad I stayed "witness" and not "medical attendant" :P
Anyway, I need to be punished with some climbing :P

(TT'ers excused, where were all you softies!!??)

2.5hrs sleep and two previous nights on the [censored] - perfect preparation
    for a ride like this!!

Wake and it's raining. Great! I like nothing better than to ride off
into the rain. I decide to wear a polypropylene undershirt for the first
time (practice for Europe!) and I thought it was cold enough to warrant
knee warmers and arm warmers too. Clamped the rat-tail rear mudguard on
    to keep my [censored] dry(ish).

I'm running late so no brekkie (last night's Beam doesn't count does
it?) so I just grab a couple of fruit bars to eat on the way.

Bike felt a little strange.. get to Whitehorse/Mitcham Rds and sure
enough, that crazy valve problem I had last week is happening again and
    the front tyre is flat.
"Of course it's happening again you idiot! You didn't change the
    frickin' tube!!" (Oops..)
So I do a quick front tube swap, getting myself covered in black rim
[censored] in the process, and proceed to Doncaster Rd.

Spot DaveB riding east and I pretend not to notice him - so I can just
ride home and go back to bed!
"Nah!".. I chase him down and off we go.
No downhill speed runs this week because 1) I notice my brakes have
almost NO pad left and in the wet, they simply don't work! and 2) I
seemed to have rubbed something into my left eye and spend half the ride
tearing up - blurry vision not so good for riding fast (couldn't see
through glasses so they were off for the duration of the ride).

I know where 'the climb' timing points are now so I started the clock
(just after the bus stop) and left DaveB to his PB attempt. HR stayed
around 180bpm for this ITT section. I didn't want to push it any harder
because I was dehydrated, very tired and could just 'tell' I would cramp
hard if I overcooked it. Arrived at 'the rock' in 14m 31s. At the top,
there was a guy and his Cannondale (with cool orange ano hubs and orange
ano rims!). He had punctured just before the top and was using C02
cylinders to reinflate. The first one messed up - lucky the second one
    worked! 🙂
Dave arrives and I ask him his time. His reply? "ah hah ah hah ah hah"
No, he wasn't laughing.. he's trying to suck down air, as if tomorrow
there wont be any left! The thought "Fark.. I don't know CPR!" crossed
    my mind! :S
Eventually he regains his composure and is damn happy to tell me he's
KILLED his previous PB of 16m 50s with a new PB of 15m 40s!! Nice one Dave!!

We roll off and turn left at the round-a-bout, doing the nice, 'lots of
downhill' BR option. I try for a high speed down Foote St. but can only
manage 87.3kph. Not sure if it was the climb TT or the alcohol that
    stopped me cracking 88kph?

Say "adios" to Dave after some more riding and I head home, glad I
managed to drag my sorry [censored] out of bed.

In the shower at home I notice my legs now have three lines, "untanned",
"tanned" and "tanned and covered in road grime" hehe. It only takes
5-10mins for the feeling to come back to my toes, so it's not "proper
    cold" yet..

    Stats:

    Time: 2h 47m
