  1. RR = Rehabilitation Report in this case.

I tore my right ACL skiing a month ago. Last Friday I had
reconstructive surgery. Went fine. They took a portion of my patellar
tendon to replace my blown ACL (looked like a piece of frayed white rope
    in the arthroscopy pictures).
Over the past week I went from lots of pain as promised, with Vicodin
every four hours to ibuprofen three times a day. Also, I went from
barely supporting of few pounds of weight in a rigid brace and hobbling
with crutches, to supporting more weight and moving around with a single
    crutch.
My one week post surgical appointment got moved out to 11 days due to
various circumstances, so I called my Orthopod yesterday and asked if I
could do more than lay on my back, ice my knee and watch Jerry Springer
until Tuesday. :-P He said ditch the crutches and see how walking with
the rigid brace goes. If that worked out try the hinged brace. I spent
yesterday and this morning walking around in the rigid brace with no
problems. I put on hinged brace. Ooh! That feels better! The doc
also suggested trying the exercise bike at no resistance and very slowly.
This is the interesting part. Being a serious bikey for 25+ years, I
never gave a second thought to turning the pedals. Oh my, that wasn't
the case this morning! With the seat raised so I can barely touch the
pedal at the bottom of the stroke I could rock the pedals from 12
o'clock forward through 9 o'clock and STOP and then back to 12 0'clock.
That was it, no more *voluntary* range of motion. Maybe with lots of
screaming and rending of flesh, I could've done more but that's what
physical therapy is for. I start that (formally) next week.
Road riding might be possible in a couple weeks. Returning to mountain
biking like I'm used to might not happen till 2006. Damn, and I'm not
even a serious skier. Did have fun this winter though.

Bravo, Shawn -- sounds like you'll be on a sharp "progressive curve" upward
in short order! Just don't go TOO nuts too soon, as tempting as it might be
    🙂

    Best wishes, Bill

Thanks Bill. I won't go too far, but I'll go
    right...up...to...the...edge.

Sounds a little too much like my bolt-tightening technique! Just don't wait
for the /crack!/ before backing off a tad.

Luckily, PAIN is a good governor... BS

  5. Had ACL reconstruction in '94.

I had a hamstring tendon used, instead of patellar tendon. When using
patellar tendon you have to watch the tracking of the patella.

I wasn't allowed full ROM for almost 2 months, except when in PT. It is
weird when you first get out of all the braces and can finally attempt to
    resume a regular life.

I was finally allowed to live without restrictions after 6 months.
Orthopedist wanted to make sure that the bone and the graft started to heal
and bond before I went wild.

    Good luck with the rehab

The right one tracks well, at least it did. Left, well we're gonna take
care of that issue in PT as well.

It was nice even after only a week to not walk like Frankenstein on
crutches. The rehab has changed a lot in the last ten years. Although
I wasn't put on a constant motion machine in recovery (many people say
their leg is already moving when they wake up), a PT came by and
started flexing things the next morning, and sent me home with a list of
    exercises.

Yeah, six to nine months is what I was told.

Take your time healing, don't be in a rush to get back. A friend of ours got
back on the bike much too soon after his recent ACL surgery and re-injured
it severly, now he'll be sidetracked for much longer still. Get well soon.

Thanks Carla. Bummer about your friend. Was he just riding along? My
docs have told me riding is good therapy. A jarring dab while
struggling over a big rock is a different kettle, which is why I'll be a
    (straight!) roadie for 6-9 months.

Apparently the doc told him he could ride a bicycle, but I think the doc
meant toodling just on the paved bike path at a slow pace. Instead, he went
balls out on his SS and did some serious damage to himself.

Its a [censored], spring finally hits and we're sitting here reading
    everybody elses RR.

Had mine done 4-8-05. I had a hammy though.
I'm close to getting back on the road but as of last night its still
    too stiff.

Sucks fer sure. Have a good tale of woe about how you did yours?
Today the physical terrorist gave me the go ahead to get on the spinner
on light resistance, mostly to decrease stiffness. When I work into it,
my range of motion is only 5 degrees off of normal in extend and flex,
but it takes work to get there. Really good for flex, still a ways to
    go extension-wise. Ho hum.
Keep those RRs coming folks. :-)

A good tale? Well that depends how bored ya are.
I did it on the maiden trail voyage of my first 29" bike, GF Paragon,
on some half way technical (for me anyways) trails. She was doing as
advertised. Going over some good sized rocks with relative ease. I
started to get cocky and had to see exactly what her limits were.
Basically I started to endo and not being used to the geometry yet, I
got the leg planted but couldn't hold everything back. Heard the
customary POP from the knee and that was all she wrote. Kinda funny,
after it happend I was wishing I had flats instead the clipless. It
was killing me trying make it down.

Your flex sounds real good. Thats the hard part of using the bike is
the flexion. I guess your torturing yourself like me and are reading
other peoples RR. Everyday I tell myself I should have waited and got
the surgery done in the winter.
    This spring SUCKS.
