Okay, I have bumped my one hour ride from 13 to 15 miles.

Riding 15 miles on a mountain bike is harder for me than 15 miles on a
road bike. You'll probably feel like you got a promotion when you
    switch to a road bike.

  2. Amen!!! MTB's just plain suck on road even with skinny tires. A road
bike is like the difference twixt a ratty '64 pickup and a new porsche

FS bikes certainly do--I almost fell off my neighbor's FS bike when I took
it for a test ride, standing up made it almost "boing" me off. LOL

My old rigid mtb w/slicks aint bad at all on the road--of course I
narrowed the bars and made the gearing more street appropriate. More hand
positions would be nice, but it's done three to four hour rides with just
    a little hand discomfort.

Drop bars and 700c are my preference if given a choice. 😉

Now that depends on your riding style, if you need speed, you need a road
    bike.
But if you just need to cruise to the local corner store, in varied
conditions such as traffic, crossing roads etc, a hardtail mtb with road
tires might be more comfortable, I know mine is.
