Not sure about the Torpedo hub gear changer. Very sloppy - doesnt give good
feedback when changed. Also changes gear when you hit a bumb in the road.
Can this be resolved? My existing nexus 7sp twist shifter gives much better
performance.

Mine doesn't... the hub only has 3 positions so there's not much in the
way of feedback to give. It's possible the toggle chain is out of
adjustment, but since it's a new bike and this shouldn't be a problem
I'd take it back and have the shop worry about it for you.

Sounds right - it will be going back for a 30 day service in a couple of
weeks. The feedback is kind of indistinct, no 'definite and sure' click to
tell you that the gear has changed. Also...

1. It takes different levels of pressure to get to each gear - going down to
first takes more pressure than going upto third.
2. The hub is more reluctant to make the gear change than the shimano 7sp
nexus - on the brompton you defn have to stop pedalling to make the hub
change, where as the nexus just requires a reduction in pedal pressure.

Maybe the brompton hub will wear in over time. The derailer is good.

On mine (a 3 rather than a 6, but hub's the same on mine (new 3s have
the Sturmey hub, I think)) there is a clear place the changer clicks
into and sits in for each of the 3 speeds.

Basically bugger all pressure for any change on mine. This more
pressure business does further suggest to me that the toggle chain is a
notch or two overtightened. Check out the manual for a diagram of how
to undo it (it's very simple), might be under back wheel removal (don't
worry, you don't have to take the back wheel out to adjust the toggle,
though you do have to undo the toggle to take out the back wheel). It's
pretty obvious if it's too loose, as you'll lose a gear, overtight and
it gets harder to select and otherwise it's just right. Experiment...

A fiddle with the toggle chain will take literally seconds with no tools
required. It's also easy to put it back exactly the way it was before.
Might as well give it a try.
