For better or worse the R.S.U. forum is connected to
rec.sport.unicycling on Usenet. That means that we get to deal with
Usenet spam and background noise.
One of the ways people on Usenet entertain themselves is to crosspost
messages with controversial topics (things like religion, politics, and
outright flames) to several different and random newsgroups. Then they
sit back and watch the flurry of replies. When someone replies to one of
those posts their reply goes out to each and every one of the
crossposted newsgroups. It can create a cycle that feeds on itself. Some
people will fan the flames by replying and add even more newsgroups to
the crossposting list just for kicks.
The current batch of crossposted spam posts are crossposted to
alt.politics.usa.constitution, rec.outdoors.fishing.fly,
rec.sport.unicycling, alt.sports.baseball.chicago-cubs, alt.native It
could be worse if they were crossposted to more groups.
Don't respond to the spam posts. It does no good and only perpetuates
the problem.
Fortunately Gilby strips away any crossposts when you reply so replies
from the RSU forum will only go to the r.s.u. newsgroup and will not get
spread to any other newsgroups. But still, don't respond to the spam
posts cause it only clogs the forum and gets you in the habit of
replying to things that you should ignore.
