    Wasn't it grand!
I set off against the wind heading east toward Uppingham then turning toward
Oakham making Burrough Hill my furthest waypoint so I could get blown back
to Leicester for an easy 45 miler.
Views limited by haze but the feel of spring in the air was fantastic and
the long coast down from Burrough Hill to Twyford welcome after the
headwinds and lots of short climbs.
All done on winding, rolling country lanes with motor vehicles few and far
    between.
    Brill!!

Burrough Hill was my goal too for a late afternoon 32 mile 'into the
wind(ish) then cruise home' from Loughborough. The sun disappeared half way
there and it started to feel decidedly cool. Lovely countryside but there
seem to be a lot of re-gritted roads at the moment.

We went out from Newton Stewart this morning on a club run which went up
over the Southern Upland watershed into Ayrshire and back, 36 miles and
about 1200 metres climb. It was absolutely glorious - bright warm sun
beating down out of a clear blue sky, virtually not wind, and, apart
from the Barrhill - Glentrool section, virtually no traffic. On the
Barhill - Glentrool section a motor-cycle club, clearly also out on a
Sunday run, came past at great speed and were a little noisy, but not
enough to spoil the ride. Excellent ride and brought me up to 75 miles
    for the weekend.

Lovely, sounds wonderful - I'm very envious.

No ride for me today - too much other stuff that needs doing. This is
getting depressing - I'm getting out every other weekend at best. My
total mileage this year (*proper* rides only - not including commuting)
is about 550. Factoring in the commuting, it's probably somewhere in the
region 950-1000, which sounds better but I was hoping to have done
rather more than that by the end of April. :-(

And I've just found out today that the 200k I was hoping to do in a
couple of weeks is now off the agenda due to Matters Arising. Pah!

Steph and I did 32 miles or so yesterday (32.75 by my puter). We went
north for a change, and headed out thro Salford to join NCN route 6
along the Irwell Valley. It runs from Bury to Radcliffe along a
disused railway line, and we found it pretty slow going. And what is
it with the cryptic signage on the NCN?

Lots of horses about yesterday, too. Some of the route is seperated,
with a wider side for horses and narrower side for walkers and bikes.
Which is nice as it stops the walker/cyclist bit getting all muddy and
churned up by the horse's hooves. Except it's not so nice when a
rider decides to save poor Chandler from the nasty mud and rides on
    the non-muddy non-horse side. Grrrrrrr.

The route comes out by Asda in Radcliffe. After a lunch stop we rode
womanfully up the big hill out of Radcliffe back towards Manchester,
via Agecroft and Eccles and Trafford Park, slight detour around the
Theatre of Dreams in all its match day 'glory' and back to Steph's via
    the LBS.

A bit longer (time and distance) that we were aiming for, but a good
way to spend a sunny Sunday. And I have the beginnings of a classic
cyclist's tan on my hands today.

My 'pooter said 196.something km, but the Organisator said 202, so who am I
to argue? First 50-odd were 'orrible coz my legs weren't working, but the
application of Magic Tea at the first control, and the removal of arm and
leg warmers, did wonders and most of the rest of it was Jolly Spiff.
Finished more than an hour faster than the last 200 too!

I'm glad you're continuing to stretch the distances and are obviously
enjoying yourselves. If you suddenly found that your 100k had been
brought forward to next weekend you would be able to complete it
although you would find it tough. In a few more weeks it will be
comfortably within your range so I'm /still/ proposing to try to nag
and cajole you into at least preparing for the longer distance. There's
a little bit of magic about the 100 mile figure. It'll be worth the
pain for the stunned look on people's faces when you causally answer
the question "and how far was it?"

My 'pooter said 419 km, but the Organisator said 400. He also said if I
only went 19k off course I wasn't trying hard enough; some people
manage to do 50. Then he emitted a hearty guffaw.

That's mad, Ted. Was that one of those rides with a "fill in the gaps"
    route sheet?

On my 300 the other week, I ended up less than 2km out from the
organiser's estimate (302-ish), even though at various points around
the route my measurements differed by as much as 10km either way...
    quite confusing.

I've had similar experiences. Mostly the 'pooter gives a smaller number
than the organisator, occasionally bigger and once spot-on. Probably coz I
went off-course and added a couple of k...

And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And

It was Porkers. Shawn sent out a route sheet in booklet form. Then a
few days before the event he sent out a revised one by e-mail. That's
the one I used as I'd neatly cut it up and prepared it. He also handed
out new route sheets with the brevet cards but what he didn't mention
was that these latest ones contained corrections to the e-mailed ones.
A couple of times I was riding along and suddenly encoutered, riding
towards me, a group that theoretically was 10 minutes behind me. I
didn't actually realise my route sheet was different until a rider I
was with wanted to turn right and I wanted to turn left. We stopped for
a better look at the route sheets. Mine said left, his said right.
Right. It does explain why I was unable to reconcile the route 100%
with the excellent maps produced by Mr. O. Survey.

Shawn apparently had a number of last minute route changes imposed on
him by the gods of AUK following difficulties with the "risk
assessment". Interference, he says, is one reason he's giving up
running Porkers, The Brimstone and The Crackpot as calendar events.

Many of the riders had ridden Porkers several times before, ignored the
route sheet, and simply rode the route they were familiar with. Info
controls were managed by finding someone who had ridden the official
route and asking what the info was. The answer to one of the infos was
given in the first instruction of the following stage.

Slightly more by mine, 33.5, which makes it our longest so far by just 1
    mile.

We rode out of Radcliffe, but have to admit to pushing up half the hill from
the former power station, now a prison, in Agecroft up to the A6.

got treated to the inglorious sight of Steph in cycling shorts.

    I wouldn't. Whilst I wasn't totally exhausted after 50k yesterday, and was
definitely less tired than the last time we did that distance even though
yesterday was hillier, I'm really not up to 100k yet. I could have gone on
longer yesterday after more food and drink, but probably only for another
hour which would have only got me to about 40 miles. We will get up to
100k, but we're not there yet. For me a 'comfortable' ride is now about 20
miles, 30 is still pushing it a bit.
