  1. I’m thinking about purchasing a Specialized turbo pro computer. I just want any options from currents users as to what you think about it. The main features that I want are cadence average, max and average speed. I’m also thinking the altimeter function would be useful.

Thanks in advance for your input. 🙂

I got one off of eBay about 3 weeks ago and really like it. I have not set up the cadence sensor yet so I can't tell you how well it works. All of the other functions work pretty well. You have to calibrate the altimeter (very easy, just set your start point altitude), the altimeter seems to be reasonbly accurate for altitude and total feet climbed, the grade% function jumps around too much to really get a good read.. The computer is overall very easy to set-up, use and read. The thermometer seems to jump around a bit. I think for the main features you want, you would be happy with it. If the altimeter is not that important to you, you could save some money by getting the Turbo Elite, or get a Cateye cpu with cadence.

Lots of stuff about the Turbo Pro in this thread from a few months ago:

Tonto, thank you for the link some good reading there. Other than the altimeter function and recording my average cadence I would stick with my Sigma 1600 🙂 . Hmmm GPS there is another thought for the altitude.

I have been using the Turbo Pro for the last 5 month and it has been very steady. The altimeter function has to be reset daily as it is dependant on atmospheric pressure and it changes with the weather. Very easy to reset to your original start point as long as you know your elevation, after that it seems fairly acccurate for my rides over the same route. The gradient indicator works fairly well as long as you are riding steadily over reasonably long incline otherwise I agree with the other post that it jumps around a fair bit.
The only issue I have seen is that there is interferance from my LED light when I use it in the evenings and it really makes the computer instant readout not reliable 35 to 100 km speed changes. The trip distance did not seem to be affected. Cadance function has been right on when compared with my riding partners other other computers. Good luck.

  6. Have one with about 3,000 miles of use on it. No complaints or issues. The altimeter elevation/ascent function is a bit of a beating because it is sensitive to barometric pressure fluctuations but it still will do a good job if you calibrate it each week. And yeah, if you put a light rig next to it, the interference with wipe out your readings.

  7. Thanks for all the information.

I do have a question about resetting the data. I found a manual online and it doesn't state hoe to reset all the data, only how to do each one individually.

Can all the data be reset at once? Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks 🙂

Yep, if you reset any one of the trip-specific functions like trip distance, trip time or avg cadence, it resets all the rest.

  9. I've had this computer for 1.5 years of steady riding and love it. It isn't too large like the other computers (especially the newer CatEyes), yet it has all of the necessary features. personally, I stopped looking at the cadence function after a while (and ultimately disconnected it) as I got a good feel for my cadence.

The altimiter is the best feature. Don't worry about resetting it everyday as the pressure changes with the weather. If you're like me, then you poribably know the altitude you are at (or don't care). The primary benefit comes from the total altitude gained during the ride (which works regardless of the accuracy of your starting altitude). This morning I started at -56ft (didn't reset it), but rode a total of ~2750 feet total gain. I've compared my readings to well published routes and the altitude gained is dead-on.

FYI... for my rides I track total miles, avg. speed, avg heart rate, altitude gained, and have software that uses these to calculate calories burned and average watts using my weight/size, bike weight, etc...

This isn't as good as a power meter, but its good enough for me.

  10. Thanks everyone for your comments.

I also wanted to ask if anyone had any bad experiences with the wireless (besides using a light too close)? I have looked at other posts, and some people are complaining about the intermittent or loss of signal, none were specific to the Turbo Pro.

Curios which software you’re using? I’m currently using CycliStats from here I like it a lot.

    Thanks,

I think any wireless cpu will have some intermittent loss of signal (traffic lights, powerlines etc.). I have used 3 different wireless cpu's and the Specialized has acutually been the best, but it still cuts out briefly once in a while.

I'm also using Cyclistats. When you set it up, you enter your personal information (include weight), then you can configure several bikes (don't forget to add the weight of your saddlebag-- I also averaged the weight of my H2O bottles assuming the average about 33% full during the ride).

I also like it, the calorie counter sometimes seems too high, though. (Do you really burn 3,500 calories on a 4 hour ride at 278watts avg?)
