one African ancestor within the last 4 generations ever ride in the TdF? Are they black with 1%
black African heritage, or do they need to be more than 50%? Please clarify. Did anybody from Africa
ever ride in the TdF? Were they Black, White, or Colored, as the former apartheid regime would have
everyone classified? Is is ok if the guy from Africa was of Indian subcontinent descent, and had
brown skin?

When I ride with guys and one has a different skin color, I can't help but remark to them, "Wow, you
are not obviously of European descent. I can't believe it!!!"

I should stay out of this, but, if you are a member of a minority group it is interesting and
inspiring to know that someone from your group has done an exceptional thing. For example, I
guarantee you that people care that there have been black astronauts. When I was a kid, every Jewish
boy knew that Rod Carew was Jewish [*] (happened to be especially notable since he was also black).
We've been over this before (which is why Henry referenced helmet threads).

I don't, however, understand why people freak out when the question is asked.

To the OP, AFAIK there have been no African-Americans in the Tour. Tony Cruz has ridden the Vuelta,
his ethnicity is an exercise for the reader. There have been African cyclists in the Tour, not sure
if any were from sub-saharan Africa. Richard Virenque is Franco-Algerian which goes to show the
non-obviousness of this kind of classification.

Virenque was born in Morocco, not Algeria, and to French parents. He is, always has been, and always
will be French ... Not African.

Robbie, on the other hand, is of English descent ... So he is a South African, but not Afrikaans.
