  1. Can anyone recommend any good cycling routes that take in the countryside and are accessible from London?

Personally I often cycle up to Herts along the A1000. Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Correction to that message: In point 1, I meant "to the east of the A1000" not west.

If you can reach the far north of Herts and fit in a couple more counties, Royston -> Saffron Walden
via Great Chishill is quite nice. You'd probably need the train to and from London, and probably
want to add a few extra miles in to get a decent day's cycling.

Not sure which are accessible from London, but have a book called Twenty Cycle Rides in
Hertfordshire. This has a number of routes, some of which take in railway stations.

You might be able to get it from Amazon:

    amazon.co.uksr=1
    3/ref=sr_1_0_3/026-2140648-5399616

    or tinyurl.comg70m

And it is also sold in Hertfordshire Tourist Information offices.

There is lots of nice countryside north of Ware/Hertford/Welwyn.

See here for some information I sent to some American friends.

    homepage.ntlworld.comHertfordshire.htm

It describes a nice 20 mile loop. Even better stuff can be had (just one example) by going through
    Wadesmill/Cold Xmas/Much Hadham/Standon/Puckeridge/Great Munden/Wood
    End/Ardeley/Walken/Benington/Dane End/Sacombe/Chapmore End (where I used to
    live)/Hertford.

Get the OS map an explore the yellow roads.

If you like some off road there are plenty of bridle paths.

The Lea has a fair towpath from Enfield all the way to Hertford which can be OK (especially in
winter when the grockles are less in evidence).
