So far in Vic this year, the road toll is:

Drivers 55
Passengers 30
Motorcyclists 10
Pedestrians 9
Bike riders 5

ie. People in cars still make up 80% of those dying on the roads (and causing at least another 15% or so of deaths).

"Police say the 40yr old cyclist was struck as the druck driver pulled into the entrance of a site for a new marina"

so (without seeing location) it sound slike either the driver turned right, in front-of-into or turned left-thru the poor bugger

Cyclist killed in truck collision

A CYCLIST has died in a collision with a truck this morning on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

The cyclist, aged in his 40s, suffered massive internal and leg injuries in the accident at Safety Beach, shortly after 8am (AEST).
Ambulance officers worked for about 30 minutes to save the man but his injuries were too severe, ambulance spokeswoman Lirije Memishi said.

The truck driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene on the corner of Dromana Parade and Bruce Road.

The man's death takes Victoria's road toll to 120, 19 more than at the same time last year.

Makes me feel better that I have a mountain bike and stay off the
streets wherever possible...

bike paths.

I ain't stupid, I ain't got balls of steel. I do have good commuting
skills learned in a country with narrower roads and no cycle paths.
Accidents happen, so does death. It's all part of life.

A junction stumped me today though, how the hell does a cyclist turn
right off of Princes Highway on to Westall road in peak hour?

stay in service lane on lhs - turn riight(u turn) at next street past the shell servo. no lights but a bit safer than sitting in the middle of the highway

I've mixed feelings about this idea. It's only going to do any good if
there's wide *positive* media exposure which is pretty hard for cyclists
to get. Media ``know'' their audience and seem to have formed the
opinion that their audience think cyclists are a bunch of free loaders
who don't deserve to be on the road.

A negative is that it raises the negative aspects of cycling. ``Oooh,
look how dangerous it is to ride a bike. I'm staying in my car where
it's nice and safe.'' I get that kind of attitude all the time, mainly
from paramedics I work with who've been to far too many cyclist
accidents.

While I appreciate the sentiment I'm not sure that it would achieve any
positives.

have you seen? And do you still drive a car?"

I work with paramedics, police and firies. They've seen it all yet most
of them still reckon cycling's more dangerous.
